In a more current scenario, another fashion icon has emerged in Narendra Modi who has made his simple half sleeve kurta, a style statement for many of his followers. BJP's prime ministerial candidate now plans to give a twist to his kurta and go for pathani suit instead, as revealed by his Ahmedabad-based stylist Bipin Chauhan. The Pathani kurta is long-sleeved, collared worn mostly by Muslim men. Now whether it is a fashion choice to project a secular image or a simple makeover attempt, it will definitely make for a good picture.

Despite having grown up in rather humble surroundings in Vadnagar his penchant for good clothes was always present. The Modi Kurta itself has an incredulous story behind it. Apparently it was Modi's own design, and he cut the sleeves short to create space in his jhola. Modi himself said once during an interview that "in my earlier days I had trouble washing my clothes, so I cut my kurta sleeves into half. For a weird reason I thought, that way I would have to wash little and it will occupy less space in my bag."

Chauhan brothers from Jade Blue are designing for Modi since 1980's when he was just an emerging leader moving around town on a scooter. He wore white trousers and half sleeved short kurtas at that time. What is now known as the Modi Kurta is just the longer version of his original design. Besides Kurta and pyjamas Modi has a collection of stoles and scarves that he drapes over his kurta.

For his travels abroad he never repeats his clothes and looks comfortable in Western outfits as well. Even at his residence in Gandhinagar, Modi is often spotted wearing his stylish Texan hats along with jeans and t-shirts. An observation made by a writer earlier stated that Modi is greatly influenced by Rajesh Khanna's style and that is why he buttons up his kurta tight till his neck.

Though his clothing is simple he has his flashy side too. Modi has a fetish for designer fountain pens and watches. Montblanc pens, Movado watches and also Bvlgari frames for his spectacles find special place in his wardrobe.

Seems like, the era of unkempt, paan-chewing netas with pot bellies, crumpled dhotis and discoloured kurtas is thing of the past.
