Glazer Family, Manchester United Owners, Shows Interest in Two New IPL 2022 Franchises-Report

The Manchester United owners are taking a 'keen interest' in the developments. Next year's IPL will be a ten team affair with two new teams in the mix.

The Glazer family that owns football club Manchester United has reportedly shown interest in the two new IPL franchises and have picked up the ITT (Invitation to Tender) which was floated by BCCI through a private equity firm. 20 October was the last date to pick up the tender documents and a number of other companies had also shown interest which includes Adani Group, Torrent Pharma, Aurobindo Pharma, RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, Hindustan Times Media, Jindal Steel (led by Naveen Jindal), entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala and three private equity players.

The ITT issued by the Indian cricket board has some strict clauses. For instance, you can only bid if you have average turnover of Rs 3,000 crore or a personal net worth of Rs 2,500 crore. BCCI had to rework these clauses after certain potential bidders made a request to lower the value so that they can be eligible to bid.

Also, you can buy the ITT or submit the bid only on one condition: you have to set up a company in India if you win. As of now there is no confirmation that the Glazer’s will indeed bid. “So, technically, overseas investors are eligible to submit a bid if they meet these conditions. We don’t really know whether Man U owners will come to the bidding table. What we certainly know is that they’ve shown interest," A Times Of India report quoted sources as saying.

Meanwhile news agency ANI reported that interest from Glazer’s actually played a key role in Board delaying the deadline for ITT. “Well yes, it is true that they have shown interest and that may be one of the reasons why the dateline was extended by the BCCI. IPL is not just restricted to India, it is a global entity now," the source pointed.

“A lot of people usually pick these tender documents to study and gather information that tends to be otherwise very useful from a larger industry perspective. For instance, buying a bid document will tell me more about what the BCCI is planning next, in terms of the league expansion, etc. For instance, if Disney has bought the tender document to buy the franchise, it doesn’t mean Disney is interested in owning a franchise. It will study the document because it has to plan its own media rights landscape,” the source added.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to become a 10-team affair from 2022 after the Indian cricket board approved a proposal to add two more franchises to the world’s richest Twenty20 competition.

The eight-team league, with an estimated brand value of $6.8 billion, drew record television and digital viewership this year despite being staged in the United Arab Emirates following the COVID-19 surge in India. “We have received an in-principle approval to add two more teams after talking to all the stakeholders,” Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal told Reuters after the AGM in Ahmedabad.

IPL teams set to be allowed 4 retentions

In all likelihood, the existing eight franchises will be allowed to retain up to four players

It is understood that a consensus has emerged on the player retention issue for the upcoming Indian Premier League auction, and in all likelihood, the existing eight franchises will be allowed to retain up to four players.

During the few last days of the recently-concluded season of the IPL in UAE, informal discussions took place between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the team representatives on the way forward and all parties are believed to have agreed on the number of players a franchise can hold on to.

As reported by Cricbuzz earlier, a team is set to be allowed to keep up to three Indian and two foreign players with the total number of retentions not exceeding four. There may also be a cap on retaining uncapped players - a team will not be allowed more than two.

It is learnt that the player purse will be INR 90 crore, and in the subsequent two years, there will be an incremental hike and the purse will go up to INR 95 crore and INR 100 crore. If a franchisee chooses to retain four players, it will have to spend around 40-45 percent of its purse, leaving it INR 36-40 crore lesser than the franchise that doesn't opt to retain any player.

It has also been conveyed to the existing eight franchises that the two new teams may be allowed to pick two to three players outside the auction with permission to take two foreign players if big Indian names are not available. It is unlikely the existing teams will be allowed the Right to Match (RTM) cards at the auction.

A formal announcement on the retention rule will be made immediately after the sale of two new teams which, as of Friday (October 22), is expected to happen on October 25 in Dubai. A few bidding parties have, in fact, already reached Dubai.

The retention rules now answer the big question in the IPL - if Chennai Super Kings can keep possession of MS Dhoni. It is now clear that the former India captain will be retained by the Chennai franchise, something its owner N Srinivasan himself recently clarified stating, "Dhoni is part and parcel of CSK, Chennai and Tamil Nadu. There is no CSK without Dhoni and there is no Dhoni without CSK." Ravindra Jadeja and Ruturaj Gaikwad are expected to be the two Indians with either DJ Bravo or Faf du Plessis being the foreign player on their list.

IPL 2022: Ahmedabad, Lucknow Favourites For 2 New Teams, Say Sources

The cities of Ahmedabad and Lucknow are front-runners to have a new IPL franchise represent them in the cash-rich T20 league, sources close to the bidding-process have told NDTV.

The cities of Ahmedabad and Lucknow are front-runners to have a new IPL franchise represent them in the cash-rich T20 league, sources close to the bidding-process have told NDTV. Indian multinational conglomerate Adani Group is tipped to bid for a franchise from Ahmedabad, while the Glazer Family, owners of Premier League giants Manchester United, have also picked up bidding papers, a top BCCI official in the know of developments told NDTV. The bidding process for two new teams in the IPL is likely to take place on October 25, with the two highest bidders set to take the franchise rights. The IPL from next year will become a 10-team tournament. The BCCI had earlier extended the last date for interested parties to pick up the bidding papers to October 20.

"Pursuant to requests from various interested parties, BCCI has now decided to further extend the date for purchasing the ITT document till October 20, 2021," a BCCI release had said.

The interested parties, who have picked up bidding papers are:

Sanjeev Kumar - RPSG.

Glazer Family - Manchester United Owners.

Adani Group.

Naveen Jindal - Jindal Power & Steel.

Torrent Pharma.

Ronnie Screwvala.

Aurobindo Pharma.

Kotak Group.

CVC Partners.

Singapore Based PE Firm.

Hindustan Times Media.

Broadcast & Sport Consulting Agencies ITW, Group M.

The BCCI is expecting anything between Rs. 7000 crore to 10,000 crore from the team bidding of IPL, according to a report by news agency PTI.

The BCCI had allowed consortiums and companies with annual turnover of Rs. 3000 crore to bid for teams while the base price for new IPL teams is pegged at Rs. 2000 crore, the report added.

The bidding papers, in the form of the 'Invitation to Tender' document, could be bought by any interested party for a cost of Rs. 10 lakh.

The BCCI had earlier shortlisted six cities -- Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Cuttack, Guwahati, Ranchi and Dharamshala -- as bases for the two new teams.

Expansion of the IPL is not a new experiment. Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala had joined the league in 2010 before both franchises were terminated.

During Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals' suspension from the league, Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions joined the league as temporary participants.

Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh Set To Bid For New IPL Team Alongside Adani Group, Manchester United

The two new IPL teams will be announced on October 25 in Dubai, a day after the high-profile India-Pakistan T20 World Cup clash. Close to 15 companies have shown their interest to bid.

Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh Set To Bid For New IPL Team Alongside Adani Group, Manchester United

The race to buy two new Indian Premier League teams is really hotting up. If well-placed sources are to be believed, Bollywood superstar couple Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh could end up owing a team with Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United a dark-horse.

Deepika has sport in her genes. Her father Prakash Padukone is a former All England badminton champion. Ranveer has been involved with English Premier League and is currently the brand ambassador of the world's most popular basketball league, the NBA.

Apart from the Adanis and the RP-Sanjeev Goenka Group, the Glazer family, the owners of English Premier League giants Manchester United, have shown interest in the IPL teams.

It is learnt that Manchester United are being backed by a corporate behemoth in India. According to a report in March this year, Manchester United's net debt increased to 455 million Great Britain Pounds due to a sharp fall in gate receipts due to COVID.

"The BCCI is not keen to give the rights to an off-shore company and will prefer Indian buyers but power equations can change the script dramatically," said the source.

Among those who have picked up bid documents are pharma companies like Torrent Pharma and Aurobindo Pharma. A Singapore-based private equity firm and US-based venture capitalists have also shown interest. Naveen Jindal (Jindal Power and Steel) and entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala are also keen.

The results will be declared in Dubai on October 25, a day after the T20 World Cup blockbuster between India vs Pakistan.

There will be an elimination round where all bids will be 'technically' verified as per rules laid out by the BCCI. All successful bids will then be opened and the highest bidders will be awarded the teams.

"Although it is a closed bid, we are expecting a fair and transparent process. The only hodgepodge could happen in the verification/elimination stage but it is unlikely BCCI will adopt unfair means to favour particular companies," said a bidder on condition of anonymity.

How much money will BCCI make by selling two IPL teams?

Winning bids could be anywhere between 375 to 425 million USD per team for a 10-year license. That means BCCI will make anything between 3000-3500 Crores per team. But there could be bigger surprises.

What was once seen as a two-horse race is now going to see multiple companies or consortiums bidding for the two new teams which will be sold by the BCCI.

The Adani Group and the RP-Sanjeev Goenka Groups are no more the 'favourites' to walk away with the new teams. There are some serious bidders willing to spend money on the world's most lucrative T20 cricket league, said a top official involved with the bidding process.

IPL and Bollywood have always had a great connection. Kolkata Knight Riders continue to be co-owned by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla while Preity Zinta has stakes in Punjab Kings.
