Chief Minister Siddaramaiah demands proper investigation of NEET results

67 candidates got 720 out of 720 marks in the NEET exam. What is the number of previous toppers? If you compare that, the results this time smell of illegality, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has urged the Union government to conduct a proper investigation owing to allegations that the NEET-2024 results have been tampered with.

“Suspicion of massive irregularities in the NEET results, which is the gateway to medical courses, is being expressed across the country. Neither the National Testing Agency (NTA) nor the Union government are going to spoil the future of millions of youth, without answering the concerns raised by 24 lakh students who wrote the exam and their parents,” he said.

A release quoted the Chief Minister as saying: “67 candidates got 720 out of 720 marks in the NEET exam. What is the number of previous toppers? If you compare that, the results this time smell of illegality.”

“One student each in 2019 and 2020 respectively, three in 2021, one in 2022, and two in 2023 have secured 100% marks, while this year 67 have got it. It seems impossible for so many people to score 100% in NEET because every wrong answer carries negative marks. Is it a coincidence or a new experiment? This should be clarified by the Modi government,” he demanded.

“Out of 67 NEET toppers, 44 are toppers based on grace marks. When so many are toppers based on grace marks, doesn’t it raise a question on the marking process and the reliability and validity of the examination system?,” he questioned.

“Another surprise is that the NEET toppers with serial numbers 62 to 69 appeared in the same exam centre in Faridabad, Haryana. Out of these, six topped NEET with 720/720 and two scored 718 and 719. The NTA and the Modi government are defending the result even though it appears that there was an examination malpractice,” he alleged.

Congress demands Supreme Court-monitored probe into ‘irregularities’ in NEET

The Congress has accused the BJP of cheating youth and playing with their future

The Congress on Friday demanded a high-level probe under the Supreme Court’s supervision into “irregularities” in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical courses and accused the BJP of cheating youth and playing with their future.

Party president Mallikarjun Kharge said paper leaks, rigging and corruption had become an integral part of many examinations, including NEET. “The Modi government is directly responsible for this. For the candidates appearing in recruitment exams, then facing several irregularities, getting caught in the labyrinth of paper leaks, is playing with their futures. The BJP has cheated the youth of the country,” Mr. Kharge said in a post in Hindi on X.

“We demand that a high-level investigation should be conducted under the supervision of the Supreme Court so that our talented students appearing in NEET and other exams get justice,” the Congress chief added.

‘Completely unacceptable’

Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh alleged that the said “scam” that jeopardises the future of lakhs of candidates is “completely unacceptable and unforgivable”.

“This year, there was news of a paper leak in it that was suppressed. Now, many candidates have alleged that the marks of the students have been increased. Students say that this time a record 67 candidates have secured the top rank and six of these candidates are said to be from the same examination centre,” Mr. Ramesh said on X.

He also questioned the results for the medical entrance exam for undergraduate students that came out on Tuesday.

“The question is how did the students get cheated, who did it and why was this result deliberately declared on June 4 amid the noise of election results, whereas it was to be declared on 14 June? Several questions are being raised on the results of NEET — How did 67 toppers simultaneously get 720/720 marks? How did eight students from the same centre get 720/720 marks? Every question was worth four marks, then how did the numbers 718-719 come? 67 students getting 720 out of 720 marks in the results released after the NEET question paper was leaked raises serious suspicion,” Mr. Ramesh said.

NTA clarification

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has denied any irregularities and said the changes made in National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks and grace marks for losing time at examination centres were behind the students scoring higher marks.

Mr. Ramesh, however, said the clarification came after the uproar and had been termed “superficial” and “unreliable” by the students.

His party colleague, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also slammed the Narendra Modi government over the alleged irregularities and called for a resolution of the students’ “legitimate complaints” through an investigation.

“First the NEET exam paper was leaked and now the students allege that there has been a scam in its results as well. Serious questions are being raised on six students of the same centre getting 720 out of 720 marks and many kinds of irregularities are coming to the fore. Why is the government ignoring the voice of lakhs of students? Students want answers to legitimate questions related to the rigging in the NEET exam results,” Ms. Vadra said on X.

Four-member govt panel to review grace marks for 1500 NEET students

Amid allegations of inflation of marks in the NEET-UG medical entrance exam, the National Testing Agency announced on Saturday that the education ministry has set up a four-member panel to review the grace marks awarded to more than 1,500 candidates.

The NTA denied any irregularities and said the changes made in the NCERT textbooks and grace marks for losing time at the examination centres were some of the reasons behind the students scoring higher marks.

The issue also took political turn with the AAP demanding a Supreme Court-monitored SIT probe into the alleged irregularities and the Congress alleging paper leaks, rigging and corruption have become an integral part of many examinations.

The party also accused the BJP of cheating youngsters and playing with their futures.

There have been calls from several quarters for a re-exam alleging that the grace marks awarded to make up for the loss of time at six exam centres have led to the inflation of marks and tampered with the chances of other candidates.

These centres are from Meghalaya, Bahadurgarh in Haryana, Dantewada and Balodh in Chhattisgarh, Surat in Gujarat and Chandigarh.

The result of the medical entrance exam was announced on June 4. Sixty seven candidates had shared the first rank in the exam including six from the same centre in Haryana.

A record more than 24 lakh candidates had registered for the exam this year.

"A high-powered committee has been set up to review the results of over 1,500 candidates. The four-member panel headed by a former UPSC chairman will submit its recommendations within a week and the results of these candidates might be revised," NTA director general Subodh Kumar Singh said at a press conference in New Delhi.

"The awarding of grace marks has not impacted the qualifying criteria of the exam and the review of results of the affected candidates will not impact the admission process," he added.

According to experts, the mark inflation in NEET UG 2024 result is expected to make securing a spot in medical school this year more difficult. Some aspiring students have turned to online platforms to demand the cancellation of the results and a re-examination.

Asked about whether the exam will be re-conducted for certain students, the NTA DG said, it will be decided depending upon the committee's recommendations.

"The idea is to ensure that students who lost time or other students are not at any disadvantage," he said.

Singh denied any paper leak and irregularities in the exam and reiterated that the integrity of the crucial test had not been compromised.

The Congress in Kerala alleged that results have raised concerns about the authenticity of the national exam for medical courses, with many students casting doubt on the procedure.

"The Modi government is directly responsible for this. For the candidates appearing in recruitment exams, then facing several irregularities, getting caught in the labyrinth of paper leaks, is playing with their futures. The BJP has cheated the youth of the country," Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge said in a post in Hindi on X on Friday.

"We demand that a high-level investigation should be conducted under the supervision of the Supreme Court so that our talented students appearing in NEET and other exams get justice," he had added.

The Maharashtra government has sought immediate cancellation of last month's NEET exam, alleging that its results have caused injustice to the students from the state.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said the trends from the latest NEET results have once again vindicated the DMK on its stand opposing the exam and reiterated that the entrance test goes against social justice and federalism.

The NTA DG reiterated that the increase in cutoff reflects the competitive nature of the examination and the higher performance standards achieved by the candidates this year.

"The number of candidates who appeared in 2023 was 20,38,596 while the number of candidates who appeared in 2024 increased to 23,33,297. The increase in candidates naturally led to an increase in high scorers due to a larger pool of candidates," he said.

Explaining the rationale behind the awarding of grace marks, Singh said, the process has been completed using a formula devised and adopted by the Supreme Court in a 2018 judgement.

"The concerns raised by the candidates through the writ petitions and representations about loss of examination time were ascertained and 1,563 candidates were compensated for the loss of time, and the revised marks of such candidates vary from -20 to 720 marks. Among these, the score of two candidates also happens to be 718 and 719 respectively due to compensatory marks," the official added.

The NTA had on May 5 claimed that the distribution of wrong question papers at an exam centre in Rajasthan led to some candidates walking out with the papers. The agency had denied any leak of the question paper.

A day later, the NTA had reiterated that the reports claiming question paper leak in the medical entrance exam NEET-UG are "completely baseless and without any ground", and every question paper has been accounted.

Student unions protest seeking NEET retest, take out huge rally in Hyderabad

A large gathering of students took out a rally protesting the irregularities in the conduct of National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET (UG), as they described it ‘NEET scam’, and demanded a re-test.

The gathering of young students, well over 4,000 in number, holding students’ unions flags of various colours and banners, marched from Himayatnagar circle, Liberty Junction and reached Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Statue on Tank Bund. The rally that began at around 10 a.m. divided the arterial road into two and the vehicles in the busy morning hour moved slowly.

According to National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) Telangana president and MLC Balmoor Venkat, who led a dozen students and youth rights organisations, the rally signifies six demands: reconducting NEET, inquiry into the scam by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court, a public apology by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, abolishing National Testing Agency, allowing States to conduct NEET, and deliver transparency and justice to the affected NEET (UG) students and their families.

Speaking to media persons, he said: “The future course in the State is to build pressure against BJP Ministers in Telangana – G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar – in all their meetings. And further, Chalo Delhi programme.”

Progressive Democratic Students Federation president Avula Nagaraj demanded strict punishment against the organisers of the test. He said that Mr. Modi must own up responsibility for the mistakes that disturbed the lives of 24 lakh young students.

The collective of the students’ unions in the rally included SFI, AISF, VJS, PYC, DYFI, AIYF, PYL, YJS, and other youth organisations.

NEET Paper Leak: Bihar mastermind admits to selling question paper for Rs 30-32 lakh, four arrested

Authorities in Bihar have arrested four individuals in connection with the NEET question paper leak scandal, including mastermind Amit Anand who confessed to selling the paper for Rs 30-32 lakh. The Union Education Ministry is investigating the irregularities to ensure the integrity of the examination process.

NEET UG 2024 Paper Leak: In Bihar, authorities have arrested four individuals in connection with the NEET question paper leak scandal. The arrested parties include three aspiring students—Anurag Yadav, Nitish Kumar, Amit Anand—and Sikandar Yadavendu, a junior engineer at the Danapur municipal council. These arrests followed confessions from the suspects, who admitted to acquiring and memorizing the leaked question paper, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the NEET-UG 2024 examination.

Amit Anand, identified as the ringleader, confessed to arranging the leak and disclosed that candidates were sold the leaked paper along with answers for Rs 30-32 lakh, according to ABP Live. This shocking revelation has led to widespread outrage and demands for the cancellation of NEET-UG 2024, sparking protests across the nation.

Further investigations uncovered burnt remnants of the question paper and answer sheet at Anand's residence, providing substantial evidence against him. He also revealed involvement in similar leaks in the past, exposing deep-rooted corruption within the examination system. Anurag Yadav's arrest, linked to irregularities in results, underscores the far-reaching impact of the leak. He admitted that the leaked paper he received was identical to the actual exam paper, intensifying concerns about the examination's fairness.

All four individuals confessed to receiving the question paper a day before the exam and using it to memorize the answers. They stated that the questions they had learned appeared exactly in the exam the following day.

The Union Education Ministry has demanded a detailed report from the Bihar Police's Economic Offences Unit regarding the irregularities in the NEET exam. The government is determined to uphold the integrity of the examination process and safeguard the interests of students. The NEET UG exam, held on May 5, saw approximately 24 lakh candidates participate. Although results were initially expected on June 14, they were announced early on June 4 following the swift completion of answer sheet evaluations.
