Both JDU and TDP have reportedly sought adequate funds to be allocated to Andhra Pradesh and Bihar for key projects and schemes.

TDP chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is scheduled to visit the national capital again on Tuesday ahead of the Union Budget.

Last month Naidu was in New Delhi and met senior ministers, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and BJP President JP Nadda. On Monday, JDU national working president Sanjay Kumar Jha also met Nirmala Sitharaman.

The Union Budget 2024, which will be held on July 23, is a much-awaited event for BJP's key allies- the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal United (JDU). Both parties have been eyeing funds for their states of Andhra Pradesh and Bihar respectively. Both partners are not insisting on a "special status" but they want a "special package", government sources told News18.

According to the News18 report, the TDP and the JDU have placed their wish-list before the senior ministers. They have reportedly sought adequate funds to be allocated to Andhra Pradesh and Bihar for key projects and schemes. “We had a meaningful discussion on many important issues related to Bihar’s development and public interest. Heartfelt thanks for your positive response,” Jha posted on ‘X’ after meeting Sitharaman on Monday.

The JDU has recently passed a political resolution seeking a special status or special package for Bihar. “If we get special help from the Centre over the next five years, Bihar will become a developed state. The Prime Minister also wants Bihar to become a developed state. We are very hopeful for special help,” Jha told News18. He said the term “special status” or “special package” does not matter, if the state is compensated in another way by way of “special help”.

Earlier, Naidu also sought a  special package from the Centre for his signature “Amravati” new state capital project and the Pollavaram dam project, apart from special assistance for the backward regions of the state. Naidu had presented a detailed memorandum to Sitharaman during his last visit to the national capital.

In the recently held Lok Sabha elections, when the BJP ended up with 240 seats, it had to depend upon allies, especially the TDP and the JDU, for hitting the halfway mark in Parliament. Much was said about taking support from parties which headed states where the contentious issue of special status was still alive and what price would be extracted by these two parties from the BJP.

Don't press too much. BJP will easily buy some 30 MPs from other parties and ignore TDP and JDU.
