Regarding your questions -> Everyone's situation is different. Giving respect to in-laws might work with some, but not all. Solution is depending on situation, people and personalities one is dealing with.

Same solution cannot be applied to everyone. It also depends on one's personality. Where good nature does not work, Strong voice works.
