cheap option to send package to india

i need to purchase a small item from amazon and send it to india...

can someone suggest which is the cheaper option (usps/fedex/usps) to send it other than sending it through some one ?

Initially I tried UPS but they suggested me to take DHL if international package for some unknown reasons. My experience with DHL was good. Indian Customs haven't released my package, DHL rep was very helpful then. 

IMHO, USPS sucks. They miss lot of packages. I don't know about Fedex, haven't tried that yet.

Cheap and best USPS. I send laptops through them no issues in customs and package is never lost. They are best in business
