Vizag Steel Plant Faces Imminent Shutdown as Second Furnace Closes

The Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited-Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (RINL-VSP) is on the brink of a total production halt, marking a critical moment in its history since opening in 1982.

With two of its three blast furnaces already shut down, the plant is now running on its last furnace, "Krishna," which is operating on rapidly depleting coking coal reserves.

As of September 12, 2024, the second furnace, "Annapurna" (BF-3), was forced to close due to a severe shortage of raw materials, particularly coking coal. Earlier in March 2024, the plant had already shut down its "Godavari" (BF-1) furnace for the same reason.

The remaining coking coal stock is only expected to sustain the "Krishna" furnace for another five to six days.

Without fresh supplies of coal, the plant will have no choice but to halt production entirely an unprecedented event in the steel plant's 42-year history.

The slowdown in steel production is primarily due to a lack of funds and dwindling raw material supplies, signaling a dire situation for RINL-VSP unless urgent measures are taken to secure resources and restart operations.

People of Vizag trusted Alliance to stop the privatization of the Steel Plant. It would be a shame if they cannot stop this with their Governments at both Centre and State.
