Yes, you are correct—unused time on an H-1B visa can be recaptured if you previously worked in the U.S. under H-1B status. This makes you cap-exempt, meaning you don’t need to go through the lottery again.

Key Points:

  1. Recapture of Time:
If you didn’t use the full 6 years of H-1B time, you can apply for the remaining period anytime. The time spent outside the U.S. can also be recaptured.

  2. Cap-Exempt Status:
Since you were counted under the H-1B cap before, a new employer can directly file a cap-exempt H-1B petition for you.

  3. Next Steps:

    • Find an employer willing to sponsor your H-1B transfer or recapture time.
    • Highlight your 15+ years of experience in C/C++, firmware, and RTOS, as these are highly sought-after skills in the U.S. job market.

For help identifying cap-exempt employers or sponsors, check the Casewise.ai H1b Sponsors database. It provides detailed information on companies actively sponsoring H-1B visas.
