How did car was stopped  , if police involved in this than more than DUI case.. lucky that he escaped with 20k. If he hit someone , thab imagine how life could be

It was a local road in small city. Still dangerous. He put car in parking mode in the opposite left lane. In below image think he is coming from the other direction and moved into the left only.

He opened phone for directions ( maps) and forgot about it and started sending her messages and never knew when he went into sleep. They vaguely remember some cars stopping and cautioning but they were too drunk. 
It could have been more dangerous.
