don't think government is like private business. it should not operate for profit. government needs to prioritize welfare of people and society - which requires subsidies, schemes etc.  most likely these guys have no clue about how various departments work, if they do end up cutting something critical it will affect a lot of people. there will be some blow back and it will be back to normal.
