A Seattle police officer who hit and killed 23-year-old college student Jaahnavi Kandula in a crosswalk nearly two years ago was fired by the department Monday.

Now, the city of Seattle and fired former Seattle Police Department (SPD) officer Kevin Dave are facing a massive lawsuit.

The lawsuit filed by attorneys for Kandula’s family asks for more than $110 million. It says Kandula experienced terror, severe emotional distress, and pain and suffering before she died.

Ever since Kandula's death, organizations like Indian American Community Services (IACS) have called for widespread police reform.

“It’s not fair to say you fire an officer and that takes care of things. That’s not what we were asking for. We were asking for clarity and guidelines,” said Lalita Uppala of IACS.

SPD Interim Chief Sue Rahr said Dave acted in a dangerous manner and broke multiple department policies when he sped through a South Lake Union intersection on Jan. 26, 2023.

That’s when he hit and killed Kandula as she walked through a crosswalk on Dexter Ave. N and Thomas St.

Investigators said Dave was going 74 mph in a 25 mph zone and hit Kandula at 63 mph.

Uppala and organizations like IACS said Kandula’s death has not only sparked national outrage but calls for widespread police reforms.

Cops have very strong unions protecting them, it's almost impossible to bring a case against a cop and arrest him even if he's guilty of negligence.

Picha lite, this cop will go to another city maybe even one which is 50 miles in a different county and get a position as police officer there. Just because he is fired doesn't mean anything, this is mostly to reduce the settlement amount.

$110 Million kaadu kaani they will probably settle for some $15 Million, 1/3rd of which will go the law firm mostly each partner will get a million dollars in settlement. IT lo manam earn chesedi peanuts, law partners(i know one through family) make 1M-1.5M each year.

Lawyers will be the biggest earners in future. These law firms find all opportunities to any of the issues caused by companies particularly tech companies. Like apple bendgate issue in iPhone 6,

battery issues and a lot more. They file a case and will ask consumers to sign up for settlement and will say the settlement amount is 100 million or 250 million etc. once the settlement is agreed, they take more than 95%. Rest is divided among all consumers who registered for settlement. End of the day we get 20$ or 14$ check and most of the people don’t even deposit thinking they are scam.

this is a biggest lawyer business now.
