CeBit: Tobii user interface controlled completely by vision

While we’re delighted by the current influx of touch-screen tablets, which means we get the occasional break from constant mouse clicking and tapping away on a keyboard, we’d be even happier if modern computing didn’t require any kind of tactile input.

You can therefore imagine how our excitement levels piqued upon learning of a Lenovo notebook capable of running a sophisticated interface operated by the guiding input of the user’s eyes.

Developed by Sweden-based Tobii Technology, the computer—which presently only exists in prototype form—tracks the gaze of whoever’s controlling it, enabling them to apply zoom, scroll through Web pages, select applications, adjust the display, and search through text documents.

Although the technology powering Lenovo’s demonstration notebook has not yet shifted into full production, both Lenovo and Tobii have high hopes for the sight-controlled UI, which is being displayed during this week’s CeBit tradeshow in Hannover.

Of course, reaching beyond our shoddy quips and shallow desire for a completely sedentary lifestyle, the technology could be of great worth to those who are physically handicapped and can neither drive a mouse nor swipe a finger across a touchscreen.

The demo notebook on show at CeBit comes equipped with twin infrared lights and an advanced optical sensor, which work alongside Tobii algorithms to determine exactly where on-screen the user is looking.

According to Tobii, while the consumer market is an area it intends to focus on in the future, it first hopes to bring the eye-controller UI to areas of scientific and medical research—for example, helping test young children for autism.
