Facts about HIV and AIDS in India

Estimated number of HIV/AIDS cases in India were 5.7 million in 2006. However, these are just the ones that have been reported.

10 facts about Aids

1. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) severely damages human immune system and eventually leads to AIDS.

2. AIDS was discovered for the first time on June 25 of 1981 by U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

3. Weakened immune system, caused by HIV, makes human body vulnerable to many infections and tumors.

4. Human blood, sperm, vaginal fluid and breast milk may transmit HIV.

5. ****, vaginal or oral sex may cause HIV transmission.

6. During pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding HIV could be transmitted from mother to a child.

7. In 2007, more than 75 % of deaths caused by AIDS occurred in sub-Saharan Africa.

8. For now, there is no vaccine that cures AIDS. But there are treatments that can slow the course of the disease.

9. Researches indicate that the origins of AIDS are in west-central Africa and the disease appeared during the last decades of 19th century or first decades of 20th century.

10. Fevers, sweats (particularly at night), swollen glands, chills, weakness, and weight loss are the systemic symptoms of AIDS.

With the burden of current disease, HIV/AIDS will come out as the largest cause of mortality in this decade.

Over 100,000 pregnant women with HIV give birth every year in India. Almost one woman in three passes the infection to her baby. The numbers of HIV +ve women are increasing.

Mother -to- child transmission can be prevented with early intervention. It can be done with a combination of low-cost and short-term preventive drug treatment. Also, safe delivery practices, counseling and support and safe infant-feeding methods can be done.

India has 10% of the world's HIV/AIDS population.

Transmission:

Sexual transmission 85.72%

Perinatal transmission 3.14%

Blood and blood products 2.17%

Injectable drug users 2.95%

Other ( unspecified ) 6.02%

Men contribute towards the majority of the HIV/AIDS population in India, outranking women by a ratio of 2:1.

The majority of the people who are infected are between the ages of 15 and 50. They are those members of the society who are most economically productive.
