as long as you are within the time period  specified in your current I20,    you will be fine.... you are legal...

As  someone mentioned, you are fine as long as your I20 is valid. But you can't visit India as your visa will come for only 6 months. You need to go again for stamping to extend your visa but thats a risky move. So avoid visiting India after those 6 months. Bear yourself here for 2-3 yrs... sAng_banghead2
