The following article from greatandhra sounded very sensible in the current context. Please have a look!
Reading the news in the Telugu papers about the car accident happened yesterday on Outer Ring road, I’m guessing that they were not wearing seat belt.
All the newspapers have mentioned about Airbags blew but did not work. I think that airbags are not meant for keeping the body intact with car seat after the accident. I think the way safety system works is, Seat belt keeps the body intact and Airbag protects organs from the impact. Without buckling the seat belts, I don’t think Airbags will be of full use.
So if my guess correct, nobody is diagnosing that problem correctly. And also newspapers are misleading on the purpose of Airbags.
Repeated incidents are telling us that either drivers/passengers are not wearing helmets or seat belts.
In past we used to blame many problems of society on lack of education and poverty. Unfortunately these things are happening in educated, middle or high income families. It is clear case of lack of awareness on the safety. In addition to improving many safety measures, it is very important to bring awareness in the society, particularly in youth.
If looked at the pattern of the incidents, they are happening for young people around 20 yrs of age; age of adventurism. So most of them are in Engg colleges or some educations institutes.
So I wish people (parents) who have suffered tragic loss of their beloved, particularly bigwigs like Kota, Azar or even Komati after recovering from this loss, take a bigger initiative to see that it will not happen to any parent by creating a mass awareness movement with the help of the media and civic societies and take it to the colleges, school and other places.
Create a movement on importance of safety and how small things like wearing a helmet or bucking seat belt can save lives of people. I think there needs to be a wider discussion on loss of life on the road in India.
If there is anything we can learn from this tragic incident is how can we prevent one more happening. This is the only way we can create better safety systems like in the West.
