According to police sources, a call was received that warned of the bomb. The VVIP was scheduled to leave Tiruchi to New Delhi by the Indian Air Force aircraft.

On information, the Special Protection Group (SPG) which guards the Prime Minister and Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) police conducted thorough anti-sabotage checks on the aircraft. Mr. Manmohan Singh left Tiruchi as per schedule.

“It was a hoax call. About four calls were received at that time in the police station. We formed special teams to investigate the source of the calls and the persons involved. A police constable of the Pallavaram police station who deserted work three months ago is being questioned as one of the calls was made by him,” a top police official told The Hindu.

Investigation revealed that the call was made from a location in Velachery and the SIM card was purchased by a resident of Tondiarpet from a mobile store in Royapuram. Police on Monday evening detained a polytechnic student Vijay Kumar suspecting that he made the call. His father Ravichandran of Tondiarpet was also detained since the SIM card was in his name.

Ravichandran said that his son was using the number. Since Vijay Kumar did not return home for long, a decoy was used to stay in touch with him on his mobile phone. He was finally picked up near Poonamallee for interrogation, the sources said.

Based on the information given by the father-son duo, police found reasons to believe that the mobile phone number was of late in the use of a police constable attached to the Pallavaram police station. “When we questioned the constable, he claimed to have made the call only to check whether the orders reinstating him back to work were ready. One of the four calls was made from a Public Call Office. No breakthrough has been made yet in the case,” an investigator added.

However, the police have ruled out the involvement of any terrorist organisation in the case.
