Cong Elders, Chiru Fight For Rs

Hyderabad, Jan 4: The race for Rajya Sabha seats has begun in the Congress party. This time Congress stands to win four seats and several senior leaders are vying with each other for them. Apart from the former PRP chief Chiranjeevi, former union minister Renuka Choudari appears to be a front runner in the race. If Chiranjeevi’s candidature is finalized for the RS seat, he is sure to become a union minister.

Congress leaders are anxious to get their names cleared before the hustle for the Municipal elections began. Interesting discussions are on in the party on who would be selected for the upper house this time. Former PCC Chief K Keshava Rao, former union minister Dasari Narayana Rao, INTUC president Sanjiva Reddy and Rashid Alvi of Uttar Pradesh (who was elected from AP) would be soon retiring. Congress got Ajij Pasha of the CPI elected as the party was its ally then. TDP has sent its senior leader Mysoora Reddy to the elders’ house then. It is being said now that of the 4 retiring members only Sanjiva Reddy would be re-nominated.

It is being said that Congress High Command is considering giving Sanjiva Reddy another term, as he is the chief of the labour wing of the Congress party. Though Dasari tried to rejuvenate Congress in 2004, he was already given Rajya Sabha membership twice.

He may not get a third term. Chiranjeevi is a front runner in the race, as he has been promised union cabinet berth. Chiru will get RS nomination in return for the merger of his PRP in Congress and saving the government during the recent no-trust vote by making his 17 MLAs vote for the government. Renuka Choudari has been playing a key role in Congress politics in Delhi. She has not only close relationship with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, but has also been functioning as the party’s official spokesperson. TDP and CPI leaders have also started exercise for finalizing their nominees.
