As the year of 2011 in film has drawn to a close, we can look back on the year and notice a bombardment of sequels, prequels, and 3-D equals. As we look upon a new year and the most anticipated releases, one may be prepared for them to come by the bucket load and though there are fewer, they’re still quite prevalent. Has Hollywood lost its creativity? We devised a list of 2012’s biggest releases for your own judgement.
The Dark Knight Rises

Many will agree that the most eagerly awaited film this year will be Christopher Nolan’s superhero follow-up, which takes place eight years after The Dark Knight. Tom Hardy portrays terrorist leader Bane who arrives in Gotham city, forcing Bruce Wayne to don the bat-suit once again. Director Nolan is at his peak and after the success of 2010’s Inception; it’s an easy guess that this will be the big studio film of the summer.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Fans proved that it’s never too early to get excited, as The Hobbit has been generating hype as far back as the mid-2000’s. Peter Jackson steers the two-part epic fantasy film adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien novel. However, not to get too carried away, as its set for a December release date. Now we beg the question; will it fill the shoes of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy?
Prometheus

In Greek mythology, Prometheus is a titan, a champion of mankind. In 2012 it is the prequel to the much-beloved science-fiction horror Alien and sees a team of explorers who go searching for the origins of mankind on earth, leading themselves to the darkest corners of the universe. It sounds questionable, but with a cast that includes Charliez Theron, Michael Fassbender and Guy Pearce, this could well be this years surprise hit.
Brave

We have yet to find reason to doubt Pixar, even after the 2011 release of Cars 2, which brought them their weakest attendance of any of their films to date, along with scathing reviews from critics. A young Scottish princess unleashes a curse upon her kingdom and must discover the true meaning of bravery to undo the damage.
The Bourne Legacy

Arguably one of the most acclaimed film franchises of recent times with critics and audiences alike, Bourne returns with the fourth entry in the series. Currently targeting for an August release, plot details are being kept under wraps. It has been confirmed, however, that Matt Damon, star of the first three films, will not return to the role as Jason Bourne. In fact, the film is not to feature Jason Bourne at all, but will focus on a new CIA operative.
Skyfall

Hallelujah! Looming in title hell for what seems like forever, Bond 23 now has a name. With Daniel Craig filling the boots of James once again, Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Jarhead) slated to direct and Indian actress and model star Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionare) as the ‘Pussy Galore’, it’s gathering major hype with Bond aficionados. Here’s to hoping it rivals its slightly underwhelming predecessor Quantum of Solace.
The Avengers
Not to be confused with the 1998 film adaptation of the British television series from the 1960’s starring Uma Thurman, which was panned by critics and swept the floor at the Golden Raspberry Awards that year. Produced by Marvel, the studio responsible for the onslaught of superhero films of the past decade and lingering in development for the past seven years, it tells the story of Nick Fury and the international agency S.H.I.E.L.D. who bring together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from the villainous Loki and his army.
Django Unchained

In 2011, production began on Quentin Tarantino’s slavery-revenge spaghetti western set in America’s Deep South. With the help of his mentor, a slave-turned-bounty hunter sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner. Tarantino doesn’t have to say much to generate fanboy charge, but details have leaked that Leonardo DiCaprio will be taking the lead villain role, acting alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, and Kurt Russel, to name a few. We’re in.
The Amazing Spider-Man
Is it a sequel? No. A prequel? No. A Re-imagining? Not quite. To be totally honest, we’re not really sure anymore. Its tagline claims that it’s the ‘Untold Story’ of the Marvel Comic book of the same name of a rebooted Spider-Man film franchise. Talk about a web of confusion. Set for release in Imax 3D on July 3rd.
The Hunger Games
The first film adaptation of the dystopian tween novel trilogy of the same name looks like a blending of Twlight and Battle Royale. Truth be told, it doesn’t look that bad, and the recently released full-length trailer looks as though it’s stayed faithful to the book. Geared for a march release, it tells the story of the nation Panem, which randomly chooses one boy and girl from each of the 12 districts to risk their lives in the Hunger Games, a ruthless competition in which each contestant, must kill until only one remains.
The ongoing argument that the recent bombardment of remakes, prequels, and reboots should be brought to an end now seems futile. We as an audience should know that film appeals both to artistic and financial sensibilities. It’s an ever-evolving medium and it’s up to us as a worldwide audience to decide exactly what is profitable and while it’s these sorts of films we speak of that get the limelight, there are hidden gems to be found throughout the year. Keep an eye out for these: David Cronenberg’s ‘Cosmopolis’, Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘The Master’, Alfonso Cuarón’s ‘Gravity’,and the yet untitled Terrence Malick’s project.
