Jagan ‘Deeksha’ bombed!

Hyderabad, Jan 11: The much-hyped ‘Deeksha’ of the YSR Congress chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy at Armoor in Nizamabad district has bombed at the ground level. There were literally no takers for his histrionics, excepting those who accompanied him in over 200 cars from Hyderabad.

Turmeric farmers are facing great difficulties in Nizamabad district. The party has expected that a large number of these farmers would attend Jagan’s ‘Deeksha’ and extend their support to him. The Jagan camp was disappointed as farmers had not shown any interest in attending his programme. It looked as if Jagan undertook this fast to gain a foot hold in Telangana, rather than for fighting on behalf of the farmers. More leaders of Rayalaseema were found at the camp than Telangana leaders.

Roja was however a special attraction as women thronged to have a look at her. Some Telangana protagonists became angry at the sight of people like Mareppa and Vasireddy Padma who were known integrationists. Some others have expressed anger that with Jagan’s ‘Deeksha’, those opposed to Telangana were able to move freely in the region, which was out of their bounds so far.

It was not known if there was match-fixing between the TRS and Jagan as alleged by the TDP. However, Telangana activists have not created any major obstacles for the programme. Those who expected a repetition of the Manukota scene were stunned at the silence of the Telangana agitators. As if out of a formality, some persons have hurled eggs at Jagan. Though some Telangana activists have accosted Jagan and demanded him to sate his stand on Telangana, police quickly intervened and dispersed them. One of the reasons for farmers keeping away from the programme was the heavy posse present at the venue. Fearing trouble, some have kept away.

Though the programme was not a big success, Jagan group which initially thought that stepping on Telangana soil itself was a big achievement, could be happy at the way things turned out. Leaving the farmers’ problems alone, leaders of YSRC appeared to be happy as the programme was fairly successful. Whatever the benefits that may accrue to the common people, political parties are certainly getting benefited through ‘Yatras’ and ‘Deekshas’ of this sort.

Supporters Visit Jagan In Large Numbers

Nizamabad: Kadapa MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy's fast over farmer issues at Armoor in Nizamabad district in Telangana went off smoothly on the second day on Wednesday with supporters visiting him in good numbers.
Raising slogans, Telangana supporters tried to express their protest at the fast venue but they were removed by police.
Alleging that Jagan, who hails from Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, has an anti-Telangana attitude, TRS and the Telangana political Joint Action Committee (JAC) had called for protests against the Kadapa MP's 48-hour fast.
Asserting that it respected the sentiments of people of Telangana, Jagan's YSR Congress Party maintained it was for the Centre to take a decision on the statehood issue.
The Telangana supporters squatted on the roads, threw stones, eggs and other objects on Jagan's convoy while he was on his way to Armoor from Hyderabad on Tuesday.
However, the protests were not strong enough to deter him from starting his fast. Jagan had a smooth passage and he could only reach Armoor in the night as he met his supporters and farmers en-route.
A large number of supporters, including women, met Jagan at the fast venue on Wednesday and interacted with him.
The YSR Congress leader demanded that the government set up a price stabilisation fund for providing minimum support price for farmers and also ensure nine hours of free hour supply to them as promised by his father late Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.
He also sought immediate relief for drought-hit farmers in the state.
