Hyderabad, Jan 18: Today is the 16th death anniversary of Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao who was born humble but grew up to become a legend, through hard work, commitment and discipline.

NTR as he came to be fondly called by millions of Telugu speaking people was born in a family in Nimmakuru of Krishna district on May 28, 1923. He died on this day, January 18 in 1996.

NTR made his debut as an actor with ‘Mana Desam’ of director L V Prasad in 1949. Though his first was a social film, he became famous all over the world for his portrayal of mythological characters such as Rama, Krishna, Ravana and Karna. While portraying the characters of God, he also portrayed the characters of anti-heroes like Ravana, Duryodhana and Karna and impressed the audience. His portrayal of these characters was so convincing that he made them look like heroes instead of villains. NTR who has acted in over 320 films came to be worshipped by the Telugus as God himself. People used to touch his feet and felt amazed by the aura of his very presence. His first portrayal of the anti-hero character of Ravana in the film ‘Bhoo Kailash’ was mind blowing. People were astonished that the man who was so much venerated, chose to act the evil character. But he has shown such mastery of acting that audience admired the great qualities of Ravana, despite being evil in some respects.

Fed up with the way Congress party was ruling the state, by changing one Chief Minister after another, NTR has founded the TDP in 1982, taking inspiration from his Tamil counterpart M G Ramachandran who founded Anna DMK and stormed into power in the neighbouring state. Congress party which has changed five chief ministers in five years in AP has fallen an easy prey to his tireless campaign against the corruption of Congress and the self respect of Telugus. He toured the length and breadth of Andhra Pradesh in a battered van on a marathon tour of 75,000 km and created awareness among the people on the need to assert their self respect. Telugus hadn’t a separate identity before NTR’s entry into politics. They used to be called Madrasis by the north Indians. NTR told the world in loud terms that Telugus were a great race with self-pride. He has also directed several films, besides acting in a few Tamil and Kannada films.

NTR was born on 28 May 1923 to Venkata Ramamma and Lakshmaiah. However he was given in adoption to the latter’s are brother Ramaiah and his wife Chandramma.

After early school education, NTR joined the SRR and CVR College in Vijaywada for intermediate and used to supplement family’s income by supplying milk to hotels on his bicycle. He acted in a play by Viswanatha during his college days, which was the beginning of the unraveling of the great actor in him. He joined the Andhra-Christian College at Guntur for Bachelor of Arts degree course in 1945. From young age he showed interest in singing and developed a baritone singing voice as a young man. He was selected as first 7 members in the Madras Public Service Commission out of 1100 members. He gave up government service to try his luck in the films. As he was a legend in the films he also became a legend in politics. His TDP won 200 of the 294 seats of Ap Assembly and became the Chief Minister.

Even such a popular man had his own trying times. In August 15 1984 he was removed from office by Ramlal, the then Governor, on a claim by the finance minister Nadendla Bhaskara Rao that he was commanding majority. NTR fought back with the help of all opposition parties and demonstrated his strength in the Assembly. Indira Gandhi who was the then Prime Minister was forced to remove Ramlal and replace him with Sankar Dayal Sarma. Sarma removed Bhaskara Rao and restored Rama Rao. NTR has however chosen to seek fresh mandate from the people and recommended dissolution of Assembly and called for new elections. On October 31 1984, Indira Gandhi was assassinated and her son Rajiv Gandhi came to power. Though all the states voted for Rajiv Gandhi in a sympathy wave, only two southern states AP and Tamilnadu gave a different verdict. TDP won a landslide victory in AP, capturing 226 of the 294 seats for it and its allies. Congress won only 26 seats in those elections. NTR was once again the Chief Minister.

NTR faced another bitter experience of his life when he was ousted from power by by his own son-in-law Nara Chandrababu Naidu. God never gave him time to fight back again. Though he has started a campaign against Chandrababu Naidu and went on touring the state, explaining the injustice done to him, he never lived to come back to power.

NTR had 8 sons and 4 daughters through Basava Tarakam, daughter of his maternal uncle whom he married in 1942 at the age of 20. Basavatarakam died of cancer in 1985. In her memory NTR started Basava Tarakam Indo American cancer hospital and research institute. In 1993 at the age of 70 he married Lakshmi Parvati.

NTR won innumerable awards. The film Thodu Dongalu he has produced has won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu – Certificate of merit in 1955.
