Sequel Fever Grips 2012 For Bollywood And Hollywood

While sequels to Dabangg, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, Housefull, Kya Kool Hain Hum, Jannat, Ghayal and Race will release this year itself, those

to Ragini MMS, Rock On, No Entry, Tanu Weds Manu, Jism, Krrish and Ishqiya will start being filmed.

Other sequels in the making include Raaz 3, 1920 - The Evil Returns, Partner 2, Dostana 2, Dhoom 3 and Shabri 2.

While many wonder if so many sequels would lead to an overkill, filmmakers are positive. “It is possible (for viewers to get put off) but eventually, a good story works. Sequels must have original ideas and only use the throwback feel to connect with the viewer,” says Milan Luthria, who’s making the sequel to Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai.

Trade expert Taran Adarsh says, “The success rate of sequels has encouraged a lot of filmmakers. The trend is here to stay. They have been successful in the past, as the USP of a sequel is that it grabs attention due to the tremendous recall value of the original. Also, the the old star cast connects well.”

Most feel that sequels need to be made with care. Tanuj Garg of Balaji Motion Pictures, which is producing sequels to OUATIM (December), Kya Kool Hain Hum — titled Kya Super Kool Hain Hum (July), Ragini MMS and a prequel to Shootout At Lokhandwala, titled Shootout At Wadala (November), says, “What I don’t like is filmmakers waking up one fine day and wanting to make a sequel just like that. They should have a good script and be responsible.” Trade expert Atul Mohan agrees, “Now, every second movie has a sequel. My question to the makers is, are they just cashing in on the brand name or are they actually taking the story forward? That makes or breaks it.”

Hollywood, too, has 75 sequels!
Seems like this year, Bollywood is close on the heels of Hollywood, which has a bank of over 75 sequels lined up as standalone part-twos and full-fledged franchises. Some of the most-awaited names include big ticket outings such as Underworld: Awakening, Wrath of the Titans, Men in Black 3, The Dark Knight Rises, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and Alien to name a few. Some others on the list are American Pie’s Reunion and Ice Age: Continental Drift.[/i][/b][/font][/size][/center]
