Facebook is one of the most anti-social platforms ever invented to mostly cater to the needs of all of those massively-insecure people/geekoids - Zuckerberg included - who have no balls, no talent, no aptitude, to hold a meaningful, face-to-face, REAL conversation with REAL friends. How sad we live in the times of such fakeness.

Facebook can't be and will never be a way to discover anything outside your established social circle, thus it can't make the world more open. It's rooted in its very system: Facebook is first and foremost a personal a publishing platform, built upon complex profiles. That's all. Anything outside the personal sphere are either mere placeholders (Pages, no matter how many tacky functions brands glue on them, like iframes, or contests) or are loosely connected standalone apps (games like Farmville - they may use your friend list, but could easily work without it). So while I use FB all the time and loving it, most of Facebook's mechanisms are exact opposite of how an open network should operate.
