Dubai's New Water Discus Hotel

Dubai has been the center for some of the world’s most outlandish architecture over the years but none have appeared as outlandish and eccentric as this creation.

The Water Discus hotel will be a two-tier destination that combines vistas of the Persian Gulf from both above and below the sea line.

Atop a central tower containing the elevator shaft will sit a helicopter pad, outdoor pool and dining facilities.

Take the elevator down 20 stories, and you’ll find your accommodation at the bottom of the sea. The rooms will all have views of the ocean and, hopefully, some sea life.

The last time we checked, whacking huge hotels on top of coral reefs isn’t very sensible, so the marine life may need a helping hand from their new neighbors in adapting to the man-made structure.

In addition to a stay under the sea, guests will be able to take advantage of the diving center, underwater vehicles for hire, a spa, a garden -- presumably above ground -- and more.

Dates and prices haven’t been revealed yet, but what we do know is the last time Dubai tried something similar, the bill topped £300 million and was soon shelved. Fingers crossed that the Water Discus Hotel doesn’t go the same way.
