Whistleblower Sp Mahantesh Was Attacked Thrice Before

BANGALORE: Police may be reluctant to admit that Karnataka officer [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/S-P-Mahantesh"]S P Mahantesh[/url] was killed because be blew the whistle on cooperative housing scams, but fresh details show the officer had been attacked at least thrice in the past. The slain officer's wife, Poornima, said he was attacked in January when he was returning home from a function.

In what looked more like a warning, two motorcycle-borne men smashed the windshields of his car. However, Mahantesh did not approach police or inform his colleagues. Poornima, too, kept mum till Saturday, when she informed the police.

"A few weeks back, he came running home at night and slammed the door. He said somebody was following him. He was drenched in sweat," a relative said.

Last month, Mahantesh was almost hit by four bike-borne miscreants when he was driving with his family to attend a function. "The bikers came close to the car, intending to attack. Poornima got worried, but Mahantesh calmed her down, saying they could be chain-snatchers," another family member said.

Mahantesh may have known what was coming and was very disturbed over the past few weeks. The soft-spoken official had once banged his mobile phone after a mysterious caller spoke to him a few days ago. "One night, we were watching TV and Mahantesh got a call. The conversation continued for 10 minutes and at the end of it he flung away the handset," family members said.

Mahantesh was posted as deputy director of the audit watchdog because of his clean track record. Days after he assumed work, scams in cooperative societies began tumbling out. Activists say he helped bust scams in judicial employees' housing co-operative society and [url="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/beml-ltd/stocks/companyid-11975.cms"]BEML[/url] employees co-operative society.
