Pulivendula, May 23: Former minister Y S Vivekananda Reddy has announced his decision to quit the Congress party, but stopped short of announcing his joining the YSR Congress as was expected.

Viveka who has been unhappy with the way he was being treated by the Congress leadership since quite some time, held a meeting of his supporters here on Wednesday and discussed his future course of action.

Talking to the media later, he said he was unable to remain in the Congress party which was criticizing his late brother Dr. Y S Rajasekhara Reddy who brought the Congress party into power at the Centre and in the state twice. He said he would not be able to put up with any criticism about his late brother. He said this was the reason why he has decided that he would not be able to continue in the Congress party. He said he had decided to be away from the Congress for the time being. When asked about his future plans, he said he would take a decision soon.

Earlier he held a marathon meeting with his supporters where the need for his joining the YSR Congress was also reportedly discussed.

Viveka who chose to remain in Congress when Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and his mother Vijayamma left the party and launched the YSR Congress, has been unhappy in the Congress party after his debacle in Pulivendula by-election at Vijayamma’s hands. He was also unhappy that he was denied the Rajya Sabha seat which he sought directly from the Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Viveka was very much hurt when he was not assigned any responsibility in Kadapa where by-elections were being held to three seats. He has expressed his anguish to close associates that the party had not even consulted him on the selection of the candidates.

Of late, Viveka has been spurning the criticism by party leaders on his illustrious brother YSR. Speculations have been rife that he would join the YSRC and return to the family fold. It was in this backdrop he has called a meeting of his supporters, but stopped short of announcing his intention to join the YSRC.
