Telugu Desam Party candidate for Nellore parliamentary seat Onteru Venugopal Reddy has denied the reports that he had opted out of the contest for personal reasons.
“These are all false reports propagated by a particular channel. I am very much in the contest. The confusion has arisen because of the filing of nomination by a dummy candidate B Ravichandra. In fact, we have deliberately fielded him as a dummy candidate. I did not meet our party president N Chandrababu Naidu and told him that I would withdraw from the contest,” he said.
But there is no smoke without fire. According to sources, Onteru indeed opted out of contest and informed the same to Naidu. But the TDP president shouted at him and asked him to be in the fray since it is a matter of prestige for the party.
“It would send wrong signals to the people and the party cadres if you withdraw. People may think we have colluded with the Congress. Let us face the result, whatever it might be,” Naidu reportedly told him. Only after that Onteru called up all channels and gave the clarification.
