The Great Pyramids of Egypt
One of the most well-known sites photographed from the ISS is the Giza Necropolis, home to the Great Pyramids and the Great Sphinx. This particular image is impressive because of the combination of clear skies and the angle of the sun that created a stunning photo. The low angle of the sun casts sharp shadows from the pyramids pointing out to the east, and you can see the fascinating dichotomy of ancient structures next to new construction.

Eruption of Cleveland Volcano, Aleutian Islands, Alaska
Astronauts aboard the ISS occasionally get to witness fascinating meteorological and geological events from their perch, including the eruption of the Cleveland Volcano as seen in this photo. Taken at 3:00 p.m. local time on May 23, 2006, it shows the ash plume moving west-southwest from the summit vent just after the eruption began.

New York City in infrared
This color infrared photo of metropolitan New York City, taken in May 1991, is interesting because the infrared film enhances vegetation signatures. It's easy to see Central Park and other areas of greenspace as darker areas amidst the lighter-colored populated areas.

The Grand Canyon, Arizona
The Grand Canyon is one of the most popular natural tourist destinations in the United States. At 277 miles long and reaching depths of over a mile, it can be seen relatively easily from space, as in this photo taken in February 1994.

Claudette approaching the Texas Coast
In July, 2003, the crew of the ISS had the opportunity to watch tropical storm Claudette as it turned into a Category 1 hurricane and drenched their home base in Houston, Texas. A relatively rare July hurricane, the storm was blamed for one death and moderate damage.

Palm Jumeira Resort and Dubai at night
The black area at the top of this photo is the Persian Gulf, and the round, palm-shaped structure jutting into it is the Palm Jumeira Resort, an artificial archipelago in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The first phase of construction is complete, but further planned developments in the shape of the world and the universe are currently on hold due to the poor economy.

Crop circles in Libya
The Libyan Desert is one of the most arid places on Earth, and some areas go decades without rain. The Al Khufra Oasis represents one of Libya's largest agricultural projects, and this image shows the dozens of round tracts of land irrigated by center-pivot irrigation, looking like coins pressed into the desert ground.

Nile River and the Valley of the Kings
The difference between plenty of water and the lack thereof can be clearly seen in this photo of the Nile River and the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. The fertile land directly adjacent to the river stands out in stark contrast to the arid desert landscape surrounding it.

Mount Everest from space
No gallery of Earth's finest features seen from space would be complete without our tallest mountain (measured from sea level, of course)! At 29,029 feet, Mount Everest is a spectacular sight even when viewed from the ISS. In this photo, taken in March 2002, the low angle of the sunlight makes the mountain peaks pop out even more distinctly.
