Listing Cargo Ship Deliberately Grounded Off the Isle of Wight

A car transporter ship was deliberately grounded off the Isle of Wight on Saturday evening after it began to list, the BBC reports. The Hoegh Osaka had left port in Southampton less than an hour before.

Two of the 25 safely-rescued crew were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Ingar Skiaker, chief executive of Hoegh Autoliners, told the BBC. The ship is now listing at more than 50 degrees.

"Our vessel developed a severe list shortly after she left port and the pilot and the master took the decision to save the vessel and its crew by grounding her on the bank," Skiaker said. "This showed great skill and seamanship on behalf of our crew when faced with such challenging circumstances."

"Our chief concern now is to ensure there is no environmental damage from this incident," he added. According to the BBC an official from the Maritime Coastguard Agency said there was no environmental damage.

The 51,000 ton ship currently also contains 1,400 cars. The BBC reports that salvage operations are expected to take several days.

1400 Jaguars, Land Rovers and One Rolls-Royce are On This Ship

 

If you’re in Germany and were hotly awaiting your 2015 Jaguar F-Type, your wait got a little longer. The 57,000-ton, 590-foot car transporter, the Hoegh Osaka, ran aground on Bramble Bank, a sandbar near the British port of Southampton. And it was beached on purpose.

 

The Hoegh Osaka was bound for Germany and contained heavy equipment, as well as about 1,400 cars and SUVs, the bulk of which came from Jaguar and Land Rover. According to the New York Times, the ship contained no Bentleys, and just one $375,000 Rolls-Royce Wraith.

The crew beached the vessel on purpose because it began listing dangerously, to the point that it may have capsized had the crew not run it aground. The entire crew was airlifted to safety.

“Our chief concern now is to ensure there is no environmental damage from this incident,” Mr. Skiaker said. “There is no oil spill reported at this point. However, we understand that the U.K. authorities have brought their spill response to a state of active readiness.”

Earlier this month, the cargo ship Hoegh Osaka was purposefully run aground off the coast of the Isle of White after developing a rather concerning list. Shipping news isn’t something that would ever interest us normally, but the cargo of the vessel did: it contained 1400 luxury cars. With the ship safely back at port after the list was reduced to five degrees, the operation to remove the cargo is now underway, and while some cars were pranged in the incident (try not to wince at the sight of the badly dented Range Rover below!), the lashings for most vehicles held.

 

 

However, these motors aren’t out of the woods yet. In fact, the whole lot could end up being scrapped anyway, despite the fact many appear entirely undamaged. Parallels have been drawn with a similar incident in 2006, in which a ship containing 4700 Mazdas partially capsized in the North Pacific. The issue was that - similar to the Hoegh Osaka incident - the ship’s cargo had been sat at an extreme angle of lean for three weeks, which led to fears of unseen damage to the car’s compontents.
