In 2004, while working for a research foundation, she gave her first attempt at the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam. In an interview with The Sentinel, Sanjukta shared her surprise at her All India 85 rank. But while that rank is usually considered as a short cut to a a preferred IAS job, Sanjukta always knew she wanted to join the IPS instead. Her reason, "The IPS is a service that can provide instant help and aid to victims at times of distress. As such there is no parallel. And I am proud to have choosen this field."

A recent Mail Today feature on Sanjukta has brought her impressive journey, her challenges and victories under the national spotlight. And while she's always been a celebrity in Assam, her official Facebook profile now has support and praise messages pouring in from all corners of the country. According to the report, Sanjukta has led the Anti-Bodo militant operations in the area for the past 15 months. She's gunned down 16 militants and arrested 64 in the past few months, besides making impressive recoveries of arms and ammunition. With all of these achievements, she has instilled fear among the outlawed Bodos.

The gender question still arises time and again for the mother of a five year old. Sanjukta is married to fellow IPS officer Puru Gupta, who is currently the Deputy Commissioner of Chirang district of Assam. But in an earlier interview, the officer said, "Gender is in the mind. There is never any constraint anywhere. So long as the mind and body are in sync and you know where your heart is, the concept of gender does not exist. We are all officers who are required to do a job. If the job is tough, then just train yourself to get tougher."
