Taking Sides: Russell Wilson contract negotiations

 

 

 

 

 

 

Negotiations between Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks are a hot topic around the NFL because the two sides have yet to agree on a contract for the Super-Bowl winning quarterback.

 

We take a look at the case either side could make toward getting its way.

 

 

Wilson's side

 

Simply put, he wins

 

Wilson has won the most games by a quarterback in the NFL, including playoffs, since he entered the league in 2012. His win total is the most in a quarterback's first three seasons in the Super Bowl era.

 

Wilson is the first quarterback to start two Super Bowls in his first three seasons. He is also the youngest quarterback to start two Super Bowls.

 

 

He’s been underpaid

 

The average cash value of Wilson’s current contract is far below the rest of the league’s Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks. That figure for Wilson is $749,000. The next lowest is Tom Brady with $12 million, followed by Eli Manning's $16.3 million.

 

In 2015, quarterbacks Charlie Whitehurst, Matt Moore and Blaine Gabbert are scheduled to make more cash than Wilson.

 

If Brady's suspension is upheld, he'll lose $1.88 million in salary. That's more than the 2015 value of Wilson's deal ($1.542 million).

 

On Wednesday, 52-year old Bobby Bonilla will collect a check for $1,193,248.20 from the New York Mets, like he has and will every July 1 from 2011-35. That means he will make more from the Mets this year than Wilson has annually in his first four years with Seattle.

 

 

Seahawks' side

 

Team needs to invest in other players

 

Including Wilson, the Seahawks currently have seven starters who are in the final year of their contracts, and that doesn’t include disgruntled defensive end Michael Bennett, who may hold out of training camp.

 

Seahawks starters in the final year of their deal: Wilson, inside linebacker Bobby Wagner, outside linebacker Bruce Irvin, left tackle Russell Okung, guard J.R. Sweezy, and defensive tackles Brandon Mebane and Tony McDaniel.

 

 

Seattle is built around running and defense

 

The supporting cast around Wilson is what makes the team go. Since he was drafted in 2012, the Seahawks have the NFL’s leading rusher, Marshawn Lynch, and the NFL’s No. 1 scoring defense. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Dallas Cowboys (1992-94, 1993-95) are the only other team since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970 to have the NFL’s leading rusher and No. 1 scoring defense over any three-year span.

 

Wilson’s rebuttal: In 1993, the Cowboys made quarterback Troy Aikman the highest-paid player in NFL history at the time.

 

 

 

It’s hard to pay quarterbacks and win

 

The average cap hit rank among 15 Super Bowl winning quarterbacks since 2000 is 21st in the NFL at their position.

 

Among 16 quarterbacks to ever sign a max deal of at least $100 million, only Ben Roethlisberger won a Super Bowl as a starter after the deal.

 

Four quarterbacks signed big deals as their second NFL contract over the previous two offseasons. Only Andy Dalton has seen his team have a higher win percentage after the deal, albeit in a small sample, and only Joe Flacco’s team has won a playoff game.

 

 

Can you count on his health?

 

Wilson is one of five quarterbacks over the last 25 years to rush for at least 1,000 yards in his first three NFL seasons. While Wilson hasn’t missed a start in his career, the other four have had significant injury histories.

 

• Cam Newton injured his ankle, ribs and back in 2014.

 

• Robert Griffin III tore his ACL in the 2012 wild card game.

 

• Donovan McNabb missed 17 games from 2005-06 with a torn ACL and sports hernia.

 

• Michael Vick missed 12 games in his third season with a broken leg.
