MVC - Must ... understand this pattern in and out  - All major Java Web frame works use this 

Front controller / common - used along with MVC 

Singleton - Most of the cache frameworks use this  and Spring container also use this 

Factory / Abstract Factory  --- ORM solutions use this 

Pr0xy / builder / template etc....

 

Learn Spring / JPA / JAX-WS / JAX-RS ... you should be good

 

 

start with Tomcat initially and move to Application servers like Jboss , Web sphere / web logic etc....
