An intense explosion rocked a college campus in India when a suspected meteorite hit the ground on Saturday, killing one and injuring three.

A loud noise sounded before classroom and vehicle windows shattered, spreading broken glass everywhere.

The falling object struck the ground near the cafeteria of the Bharathidasan Engineering College in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the Wall Street Journal reported. The small rock fragment left behind a four-foot-deep crater.

V. Kamaraj, a bus driver for the school, was in the area when the rock fell and died on Saturday.

While people have been injured by meteorites in rare incidents, Kamaraj would be the first human in recorded history to die from one if Indian scientists confirm the object is a fragment of an asteroid or comet.

Annie Hodges was napping on her sofa on March 30, 1954, when a meteorite crashed through her door, causing an explosion that left bruises on her body. Some 1,500 were injured in Chelyabinsk, Russia, on Feb. 15, 2013, when a 10,000-ton meteor flew through the Earth's atmosphere, exploding in the air and sending a shock wave to the ground.
