Giving an ode to flight attendant Neerja Bhanot, who sacrificed her life to save the passengers of the hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 are actors Sonam Kapoor, Shabana Azmi and Shekhar Ravijiani. Directed by Ram Madvani, Neerja celebrates women empowerment in a whole different light. The movie has hit the theatres today and let’s see how it turns out to be.

Story:

Neerja is the story of Neerja Bhanot (Sonam Kapoor), who is a 23 year old proud daughter of Rama Bhanot (Shabana Azmi) and Harish Bhanot (Yogendra Tiku). She is an independent girl who along with being an air hostess is also a model.

Everything in her life is picture perfect until she boards her first flight Pan AM 73, which is a New York bound flight via Karachi. The flight gets hijacked at Karachi international airport and 300 passengers on board are now stuck in it along with Neerja.
How this single young girl saves hundreds of life? Forms the rest of the story.

Positive Points:

From the hard hitting story, to the tearjerker climax, Neerja is perfect from the word go. Starting with the performances, Sonam Kapoor sure has improved a lot since her first outing in the industry. The actress has put in a lot of hard work in the character and does look and act impressively.

The part when she reads her husband’s abusive letters is praiseworthy. Shabana Azmi is just out of this world. The actress is so good in the emotional scenes that you might need a box of tissues to take along. She is brilliant in every scene and her climax sequences are just exceptionally heart-rending. Musician Shekhar Ravjiani makes his debut as an actor in Neerja’s love interest’s role and he does a striking job.

Negative Points:

Except for a small portion in the second half that is dragged to a bit and Sonam somewhere being her original self nothing can be termed negative about the film.

Technical aspects:

Ram Madhvani has done an amazing job portraying and story of Neerja on screen. The main problem with most of the biopics made in India is that they show the character as a hero from the first instance, but that is not the case with Neerja. She is just a normal girl and leads a normal life. It is her bravery that she shows in the flight is what makes everyone of us celebrate her as a person.

The narrative of the film is absolutely naive and not even a single shot seems unnecessary. The screenplay is tight and kept crisp till the very end. The music album is apt and the songs just go with the whole plot. While the first half keep you glued to your seats, the second half is a little dragged, but it is the climax that is totally worth it. I could see tears rolling down from each person’s eyes in the theatre.

Verdict:

On the whole, not everyday do we come across a film like Neerja. The narration, performances, emotions and overall thrilling moments makes this film a must and should watch for every one.
