Excerpts from a telephonic interview:

 

It’s been 18 months since your party came into power in the new state of Telangana. How has it evolved from a movement for separate statehood to a ruling party?

On June 2014, when my father KCR took charge, we were a new state. We had to start fresh as a state. People of Telangana knew KCR as an agitator. But no one was really sure of how he will be as an administrator. People believed in us because of our role in the movement, and gave us a majority mandate in the assembly, but they hadn’t seen us perform. Their trust on us was purely on blind faith. But we have tried hard to keep their faith in us, and focused on delivery. But our party’s performance since the statehood has been on the basis of our track-record since June 2014. We won two Lok Sabha seats—Medak and Warangal—in the by-polls, and recently we swept the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections, something no one could imagine. It is because we have shown our commitment to all communities within Telangana, irrespective of who they are or where they belong to, and they have only reposed their faith on us.

 

 

How are your relations with other states, most notably post-bifurcation Andhra Pradesh?

Very cordial, for a start. It’s like our relations with any other state. While agitating for statehood, we had to be a little harsh while making our demands. But post-bifurcation, we have been co-operating on issues of division (departments, administration). So many people from Andhra live in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana, and our relations with them has only been cordial. After all, you have to know that we might be two states, but we are one people (linguistically bound by Telugu). Our only request to the government at the Centre is, please treat Andhra Pradesh and Telangana equally. We are both new states, and if one gets a special package, the other should too.

 

 

There’s also a legacy battle over the creation of Telangana, with both TRS and the Congress wrangling for it. While the Congress claims it was Sonia Gandhi who delivered Telangana, your leaders attribute its creation to your father. How does the TRS look at it?

Credit is something you can’t buy in a shop. We believe, and we have repeatedly stated it in various platforms that Telangana would not have happened without Madam Sonia Gandhi’s interest and push. We are clear about that. But what people should remember is that we, the TRS, fought for it for 15 years.
