Hyderabad: The much-awaited Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) is all set to become operational from June 2, coinciding with the Telangana State formation day.

"We are planning to launch the metro service on Telangana formation day. We are inviting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the launch. The officials are working out dates with the prime minister's Office," the Telangana Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao said.

Billed as the most modern metro rail technology in the country, the Rs200 billion, 72-km long Hyderabad Metro project is being executed by L&T under Public-Private Partnership model.

The first phase includes Stage-1 from Nagole to Secunderabad railway station (about 9km) under Corridor-III and stage-2 from Miyapur to SR Nagar (11.9km) under Corridor-I. A total of 20km stretch will be opened up for commercial operations on June 2.

When fully completed, the Hyderabad Metro will be the largest and most modern network in the country. It involves construction of 66 stations, covering three corridors, with state-of-the-art facilities including escalators and elevators.

All the three corridors of the metro rail, with a total stretch of 72kms, are above the ground on elevated flyovers passing through the median of the roads at a height of 12 meters to 18 metres.
