They do it for both reasons as well. Do you think people just join blindly without knowing what other benefits the Army provides like free college tuition(GI Bill), post benefit retirements etc? You are an idiot if you think so. 

 

My recruiter himself told me that he joined because 1) He loves this nation 2) He wanted to go to school and since his family couldn't afford it, joining the Army provided him the option to do it 3) Now he has a kid and Army will pay for his kid's schooling and college as well so that's another strong reason why he prefers staying in the Army for life. 

 

So there are benefits but you are eventually doing some service to avail those benefits. People like you are free loaders who have no idea about what that means, you are only found lurking around forums like these taking a dig at people who do things that you know you aren't physically or mentally capable of.
