Nagaland: IAS Officer Builds 100-Km Road In Manipur Without Govt Help

naga-750x500.jpg

Ralph Marston once quoted, “See the positive possibilities. Redirect the substantial energy of your frustration and turn it into positive, effective and unstoppable determination”. The same has been proven by the villagers of Manipur’s Tousem sub-division in Tamenglong district under the leadership of Armstrong Pame, the native and the sub-divisional magistrate of Tamenglong.

This young Naga IAS officer has initiated a project of building a 100 km road in the remotest area of this village without the help of government funding. The amount of Rs. 101 Cr was sanctioned by the center in 1982 but the project never took off due to unknown reasons, despite after several follow ups and promises. But as it is said, necessity is the mother of invention. There was an outbreak of tropical diseases in the area and in the absence of motorable roads the patients could not reach the hospitals and lost their lives. Most of the doctors were also not ready to visit the place to treat the patients. In such a situation, Armstrong Pame reached out in his friend circle and arranged the doctors who camped themselves in the village to treat more than 500 patients.

His determination became even stronger and he decided to build a road with the help of his family and villagers, without taking any aid from the government. The family members, who have been struggling since six decades in this remote village, agreed to support him. A sum of Rs. 4 Lac was arranged from his retired school teacher father’s one month pension, his brother’s and sister in law’s one month salary each, his younger brother’s entire first salary and Pame’s five months’ salary. The amount was sufficient to kick start the project but more money was still required. The facebook was used as a rescue tool in that situation. A page was created, seeking donations and the overwhelming response was received from all over the world and contributed Rs. 1.2 Lakh.

The villagers made their signification contributions based on their capabilities by providing food and accommodation to the workers, by supplying fuel for the earthmovers and also being a part of manpower for the project. The donation centers have been set up in Delhi, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Guwahati, Shillong and Dimapur and NRIs from Canada, USA and the UK have been sending their contributions for the project named as Tamenglong-Haflong Road. As a token of thanks and appreciation for the support received from world wide, a monolith will be erected on the completion of the road with the name of all donors.

This real life story is a landmark example of dedication, determination and the humanity that is still alive on this earth.

The Couple Who Distributes 1500 kgs Of Free Vegetables Every week To The Needy, Here’s Why and How

Untitled-1-19-750x500.jpg

I was fortunate enough to interview Mr. Mohit Shah and Mrs. Kinnari Shah, who have started a unique initiative to help the poor people by distributing vegetables in different parts of the city.

“One day I was buying vegetables from the local vendor and there was a poor woman standing beside me and gazing at the vegetables. Seeing this, I got an urge to ask her that why is she gazing at vegetables and why isn’t she buying any of them. After interacting with her I came to know that due to poverty and high prices of vegetables they haven’t seen vegetables in their kitchen since last six months. They cannot afford to eat vegetables and can’t even think of buying fruits. I gave her all the vegetables which I had bought for our family. But this incident left a very deep pain inside me. Soon, I came up with an idea to distribute vegetable amongst the poor people of our city. I discussed this idea with my husband and he readily agreed to it. He told me that God has blessed us with more than we had asked for, so only way we can thank God is by doing our bit for the society. He said that we have various expenses which can be reduced and that savings can be used for vegetable distribution.

It has been eight years since we are doing this activity. We distribute vegetables and fruits thrice a week. Initially, we had started with 300kg vegetables a week and now we distribute around 1500kg vegetables a week. We buy vegetables from Jamalpur and go for distribution in different part’s of our city. We have got an amazing support from people, like the vegetable vendor doesn’t charge any transportation cost, many of times the whole sellers gives us extra 50-100kg fruits for free and tell us to distribute it. One time cost to buy vegetables is around 3000 to 4000 ₹. We distribute cabbage, bottle gourd, tomato, cauliflower, carrot, radish, sugarcane, sweet limes, muskmelon, bananas and much more. Like today, we are distributing Papaya’s. We even distribute mangoes during the season. Over the years we have learnt that Pappad is the favorite amongst the poor, so now we have started distributing it too with the vegetables. We usually spend around 10 lacs annually after this activity. We also provide food grains to the needy families and also provide for their medical expenses. We want to help poor people in whatever way we can. The almighty has blessed us by giving an opportunity to make others lives better. We don’t accept donations from people, instead we urge them to do the same according to their financial capacity.

We have only one message to the people, that try to help poor people in whatever way possible. The happiness and satisfaction you will receive is priceless. Believe me, charity is an addiction, and we are glad that we have been addicted to it.”

Kept Doing Duty Even During Pregnancy & Now Patrols The City With Her Daughter
archna_jha_145664851-1-750x500.jpg

Recently a survey was conducted by to review the gender inequality in Police force in India. The reports generated from that survey expressed concerns about the condition of the women in the field.Women in the police force have been grossly underrepresented in our country as they constitute to a mere  6.11% of the total police force. Despite a meagre number and lack of basic amenities like toilets, uncomfortable clothing & absence of privacy the lady police officers work have been commendable and praiseworthy.

The story of Raipur DSP Archana Jha is motivating and highlight the women power and instigates a sense of belonging in the nation, this brave officer takes her daughter to field with her for patrolling.

Archana has the duty to vigil the city for 2 nights in a week. In the absence of her husband who works in Bilaspur, it is not possible to leave her daughter at home. When the situation demands, she has to spend the whole nights on the streets of the city with her little girl accompanying her.

At the time of pregnancy when a lady is supposed to rest and take care of herself, the lady cop was bustling in the streets of Chhattisgarh organising security of the events of Chief Minister. She took the maternity leave for just 4 and half months which is just a fraction of 2-year leave granted by the Centre. The leave has now been increased to 6 months in the state.

Archana expresses deep concerns regarding the condition of women in the force. The women on duty have to go thirsty for long hours as there are no toilets around. The duty gear they wear is so heavy and uncomfortable that it chokes them to death. The lack of personal space is the biggest hindrance to restrict women from joining the Police forces.

It is a good news that the Ministry of Home Affairs are encouraging women participation in security with the announcement of 33 percent posts of constables in central police and 15 percent in border guarding forces but there is still a long way to go.
