Chicago State University Has Sent Layoff Notices To Every Single Employee

Chicago State University's budgetary struggles came to a head Friday with the school announcing that it will send layoff notices to all 900 of its employees unless it receives new funding from the state.

 

The school president Thomas Calhoun Jr. said in a statement that CSU will need to make staff cuts soon, according to CBS. Chicago State is one of nine states schools still waiting on overdue state funding stalled during Illinois' months-long budget impasse.

“We have the legal responsibility to communicate to our employees that, should our statehouse fail to fund us, and put us in a position where we have to be compromised, we would need to have the flexibility and the legal position such that a reduction in force could take place,” Calhoun said.

Calhoun said the school is not in danger of closing down entirely, and he does not know how many cuts will need to be made. About 300 of the employees are faculty members, according to the Tribune.

The university has already cancelled its spring break in order to end the semester on April 30, about two weeks earlier than normal. According to CBS, the school must announce potential layoffs at least two months in advance.
