Congress Demands Special Status For Andhra

Several hundred Congress leaders and activists will gather in central Delhi on March 12 to stage a protest in demand of a “special status” for Andhra Pradesh.

 

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi met a delegation from Andhra Pradesh on Thursday led by senior party leader and State general secretary in-charge, Digvijay Singh.

 

Both Ms. Sonia and Mr. Rahul endorsed the protest scheduled on March 12, saying that they support the implementation of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, a policy that promises special status for the State and guarantees socio-economic welfare ever since a separate State of Telangana was carved out of it in 2014.

 

Public resentment has been brewing across Andhra Pradesh since the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) of Andhra Pradesh has been in constant tussle with the centre over the division of resources with Telangana. And this time, it expected a bigger share from the Union Budget to bridge its resource gap and avert the estimated budget deficit of Rs.16,500 crore. Much to the dismay of the TDP government, the Union Budget for 2016-17 has “measly” allocations for the state.
