HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh government will replace all the present street lights with energy-efficient LED lamps. Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), an affiliate of the power ministry, has offered to invest Rs 1,000 crore on the project which will be implemented in all the 111 municipalities and corporations.

It will take up the programme in consultation with the State Energy Conservation Mission (SECM), municipal and urban development department and Discoms. The investment will be recovered in the form of saved energy.

The first-phase programme will be taken up in Bhimavaram, Narsapur, Palakollu, Tadepalligudem, Tanuku, Kakinada, Tuni, Chirala, Ongole, Narsaraopeta, Tenali, Nellore, Anantapur, Dharmavaram, Guntakal, Tadipatri, Hindupur, Madanapalle, Tirupati, Kurnool, Adoni, Nandayal, Yemminganur and Guntur. As many as 1.85 lakh street lights will be replaced with LED lights in these 24 municipalities.

EESL is also keen to replace incandescent bulbs (ICL) in domestic sector with high-quality LED lamps which will be provided to  households at a heavily subsidised cost under DSM-based Efficiency Lighting Programme (DELP). According to officials, an LED bulb, costing about Rs 400 in the market, will be supplied to households by  EESL at Rs 10.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is also planning to replace conventional bulbs with LEDs in the city. “The proposal is before the standing committee. If okayed, work will be taken up initially in a few selected areas including the old city,” says a senior official of GHMC.

LEDs produce 3.4 BTUs/hour compared to 85 for incandescent bulbs. Common incandescent bulbs get hot and contribute to heat build-up in a room. As LEDs prevent this heat build-up, they help in reducing air-conditioning costs in the home.

LED bulbs use only 2-17 watts of electricity (1/3rd to 1/30th of incandescent or CFL). LED bulbs used in fixtures inside the home save electricity, remain cool and save money.
