company can withdraw offer anytime man, if you don't pass their background checks/drug tests. you can also be fired/laid off etc anytime even if you have an offer

For me I worked as contractor for a month before extending the fte offer. They asked me to apply via portal then they conducted few formal interviews /discussions/get-to-know-me type. And then they gave me the offer. Once I accept that they gave me start date and then bg drug employment verification took place. Before the start date bg verification needs to be done. Drug test with in a week of joining as a fte.
