there is an entire sport built around it  

 

after a certain speed a water vessel equipped with these hydrofoils no longer needs to be have full under body hull in contact with water

these hydrofoils generate so much upward thrust (similar to airliner wings) that they lift the entire boat above water and only the foils remain in contact with water there by reducing the resistance offered by water, thus higher speeds of travel possible
