Banginapalli mango to get geographical indication

Banginapalli mango variety

The king of fruits -- Banginapalli mango -- is likely to get geographical indication as the Directorate of Horticulture and the State Horticulture University have embarked upon the exercise.

Though the area under the Banginapalli variety mango is limited, Kurnool district assumes importance because of its origin from Banaganapalli in the district. Nawabs of Banaganapalli introduced the mango variety centuries ago which spread to every nook and corner of the State.

70 p.c. area

The geographical indication will be sought for the entire State since the variety occupies nearly 70 per cent of the total mango area of four lakh hectares in the State. The variety is cultivated in Krishna, West Godavari, Kurnool, Chittoor, Khammam, Adilabad, Karimnagar and Medak.

In Kurnool district, the Banginapalli orchards occupy 15,000 hectares. Banginapalli variety is known for its golden yellow colour, sweet aroma, juicy and fleshy pulp.

‘Benishan'

Banginapalli fruit also known as ‘Benishan' weighs up to 200 grams while the average weight is 100 grams. The fruit grown in the rain-fed areas contains more sugar with longer shelf life. Assistant Director of Horticulture M.V. Madhusudan said data collection in the prescribed format was being taken up to support the claim.

Despite the popularity of the fruit and high demand in the market, farmers of Banginapalli mango are not happy because of steep price fluctuation. The fruit is controlled by middlemen which forces the farmers to auction the orchards before the onset of flowering.

The Nawabs of Banaganapalli in Kurnool district introduced the mango variety centuries ago which spread to every nook and corner of the State.
