Battles on the streets, petrol pumps running dry...and blackouts could be next: France plunged into chaos by protests over labour laws just weeks before the Euros

Nearly twenty people have been arrested today, as nearly 20,000 took to the streets all over France in demonstrations against new labour laws that turned violent this afternoon. In Paris, police wielding batons and dressed in body armour could be seen lashing out and charging at the crowds (top right). In Lyon, protesters let off orange smoke and another could be seen holding a flower in one hand and a flare in the other (bottom right) as he faced the intimidating riot police line. Meanwhile, strikes have halted oil production meaning petrol pumps are running dry and action at nuclear power plants could leaves the nation's energy supply at risk. The strikes and protests are in response to proposed labour laws which unions say will leave them with less job security and could force them to work a longer week.
