Wind damages country's largest tricolour

Hyderabad: Four days after it was unfurled with much pomp and ceremony, officials on Monday took down India's largest flag as strong winds ripped it apart.

In line with the strict flag code, officials replaced the tricolor late Monday night.

A "damaged or dishevelled flag should not be displayed" and instead "be destroyed as a whole in private, preferably by burning or by any other method consistent with the dignity of the flag", according to the code.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao hoisted the flag on June 2 as part of Telangana formation day celebrations. It was unfurled on India's second highest flagpole that is 291 feet high.
R&B department chief engineer Ganapathi Reddy said the flag was bound to get damaged because it was continuously flapping in the wind.

Experts blamed the flag's size for the damage and added that its length was not in proportion with the height of the mast. Others said the quality of the material used for the flag - which a Kolkata firm had manufactured for Rs 1.3 crore - was poor.

The Telangana government had initially planned to install a flag post as high as 303 feet, but the Airport AuthoritAuthority of India objected.

Sources at the chief minister's office said an inquiry would be initiated to establish the reason for the flag's damage even as principal secretary (transport, R&B), Sunil Sharma, claimed the flag was taken down"for maintenance purposes". Sharma refused to acknowledge any damage to the tricolour.
