HIGHLIGHTS

  1. Omar Mateen, 29-year-old, was reportedly behind the Orlando shooting
  2. Omar's father said he was motivated by hatred of gays, not by religion
  3. 50 were killed, 53 injured in the Orlando bar shooting

The father of the suspected gunman in today's Orlando mass shooting said he believed his son was motivated by hatred of gays -- not by his Muslim religion.

"This had nothing to do with religion," Mir Seddique told NBC News. He said his son, Omar Mateen, recently lashed out in his presence after witnessing a gay couple embracing in downtown Miami, and suggested the incident may have triggered the atrocity.

"He saw two men kissing each other in front of his wife and kid and he got very angry," Seddique told the network.

Omar Mir Seddique Mateen, a 29-year-old U.S. citizen, opened fired in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, early on Sunday, killing 50 and injuring 53.

During the attack, Mateen called 911 and pledged his allegiance to ISIS, FBI Special Agent In Charge Ron Hopper told reporters.

Mateen, who had been armed with a handgun and AR-15-type rifle, was killed at the scene after a SWAT team stormed the club, Hopper said.

Mateen was born and raised in New York until his family moved to Port St. Lucie in eastern Florida. He was of Afghan descent.

He had worked as a contracted security guard in Florida since 2007 for G4 Security — a company that provides security for federal buildings.

In 2009 he was married to Sitora Yusufiy in New Jersey, but his wife left him after a few months of marriage when he began physically abusing her, she said during a press conference Sunday night.

The divorce wasn’t finalized until 2011, government records obtained by BuzzFeed news show. Yusufiy said it took a year and a half for the divorce to go through because she was in New Jersey, while Mateen was in Florida.

She said she met Mateen online and that in the beginning he was a normal person, but after a few months “I saw he was bipolar” and he “would get mad out of nowhere.” She called Mateen “mentally ill.”

She also that he was pursuing a career as a police officer at the time and that she believed he had worked at a Fort Pierce-based juvenile detention center.

Mateen’s father, Seddique Mateen, told NBC that a few months ago Omar Mateen was angered by two men kissing in Miami, especially because it took place in front of Omar Mateen’s three-year-old son.

“We are saying we are apologizing for the whole incident,” Seddique Mateen said. “We weren’t aware of any action he is taking. We are in shock like the whole country.”

Public records show that Mateen was living with a woman named Noor Zahi Salman, who appears to be the mother of his son.

Salman is named as Mateen’s wife in a mortgage filed in St. Lucie County in September 2013.

A neighbor of the couple told the Washington Post that Salman did not wear the hijab or any other type of religious garb.

The FBI investigated Mateen twice before Sunday’s attack — once in 2013 and again in 2014 — for possible terrorist motivations and connections.

The FBI first became aware of Mateen in 2013 after he made “inflammatory” comments to coworkers, Hopper said.

“The FBI thoroughly investigated the matter including interviews with witnesses, physical surveillance, and records checks. In the course of the investigation, Mateen was interviewed twice,” Hopper said. “Ultimately we were unable to verify his comments and the investigation was closed.”

The FBI opened a second investigation into the security guard in 2014 when they suspected he had connections to Moner Mohammad Abusalha, an American terrorist and suicide bomber who died in 2014. Investigators determined that contact between them was minimal and “did not constitute a relationship.”

Hopper said that Mateen had legally purchased a handgun and a long gun in Florida in the past week, as he had active security officer and firearm licenses.

Records also show he filed to change his name from Omar Mir Seddique to Omar Mir Seddique Mateen in 2006.

Seddique Mateen, the father of the alleged shooter, had a Youtube channel and Facebook page which he used as a platform to call for his strong political beliefs, which included support for the Afghan Taliban.

Seddique Mateen, who has also been referred to in some media reports as Mir Seddique, announced on his show that he wanted to run for president of Afghanistan. In one recent video, he expresses gratitude toward the Afghan Taliban, while denouncing the Pakistani government, especially the ISI, or Inter-Services Intelligence.

Mateen also posted on his Facebook page that he had met with members of Congress from the Foreign Affairs Committee during a hearing on Afghanistan. BuzzFeed News has reached out to the committee, though there is no record of a hearing in which Mateen took part.
