VIJAYAWADA: Tension prevailed in Jakkampudi YSR Housing Colony, on Friday, when the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials with the support of police forcibly tried to vacate ‘bogus’ families from the place.

According to VMC officials, about 400 victims, who lost their houses in a fire mishap few months ago at the flower market area, were provided housing facility at the Jakkampudi colony. On Friday afternoon, the VMC officials along with the police visited the housing colony and announced that 292 people, who were given rehabilitation, turned out to be bogus.

“We didn’t receive any prior notice from the officials to vacate the houses, then how can we leave the place. Already, we have lost everything in the fire mishap and now the officials are forcibly vacating us from this place,” a resident said. Heated arguments were exchanged between the officials and residents. Sensing trouble, the police deployed Special Forces near the colony to avoid any untoward incident.

As the officials turned a deaf ear to their pleas, several women along with their children staged a massive protest at the colony. Meanwhile, Left parties in association with YSR Congress party extended solidarity to the residents.
