HYDERABAD: For the second time in two weeks, strong winds on Wednesday tore the city's latest source of pride -the largest flag at Sanjeevaiah Park beside Hussainsagar.

According to officials, the tear was noticed around noon, which meant that the torn flag was prominently visible in the area. As soon as it was detected, officials from the roads and buildings (R&B) department swung into action and brought the flag down.

"We have brought the flag down. We have four more flags that we can hoist. But we will wait for the wind to subside before we hoist another flag," Sunil Sharma, principal secretary, R&B department, told TOI.

He added that the department has handed over the responsibility of maintaining the flag to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). He, however, admitted that maintenance of the flag was irksome. Such kind of damage was bound to happen owing to the sheer size of the flag.

As per the rules under the Flag Code of India, the largest flag is meant to measure only 21x14 feet. However, the city flag is five times bigger at 108x72 feet!

"When there is a flag code, what is the harm in following it? However, since we do not know much about the code, we can only call it a national shame," said Adithya Reddy, a local resident, after the second tear.

The code states that the national flag should be made of 'hand-spun and hand-woven wool/cotton/silk khadi bunting'. However, experts such as retired commodore K V Singh, who is a member of the Flag Foundation of India, said that the prescribed material gets discoloured very easily.

"It is not possible to make a huge flag made of khadi flutter. The textile also gets discoloured if it is kept hoisted for a long time. Unfortunately, there is no proper monitoring authority where people can go and file a complaint," he said.

He added that it is precisely due to a lack of proper monitoring agency that people take the flag code for granted. In fact, flags have been hoisted in many places across the country, many in violation of the code, but this one stands out owing to its size.
