New Delhi: Former Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble will face his former team-mates Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, who are part of BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), on Tuesday in an interview for the post of head coach of the Indian cricket team.

Earlier, BCCI had received a total of 57 responses to its advertisement for the job, and 21 of them were shortlisted for the advisory committee to review. India has been without a full-time head coach ever since the listless Duncan Fletcher’s contract ended in March 2015.

Kumble was the final candidate to throw his hat into the ring for the high-profile position on June 10.

It is believed that Ravi Shastri – who was Team India’s technical director till the ICC World T20 in March – and Kumble are the two front-runners for the high-profile job.

Though the 45-year-old Kumble doesn’t fulfil the criterion of having coached an international or first-class team and is also not qualified through a certification/assessment programme conducted by any of the full member countries, his outstanding record and vast experience could tip the scales in his favour.

The former leg-spinner is third-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket with 619 scalps from 132 matches -- only behind Sri Lankan Mutthiah Muralidaran (800) and Australian Shane Warne (708).

Kumble has been known to have demonstrated a shrewd cricketing brain during his career. His ability to change the pace and use the pitch cleverly helped him become India’s highest Test wicket-taker.

The Karnataka player also has played 271 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) taking 337 wickets -- most by an Indian.

Kumble also captained the Indian Test team when he replaced Rahul Dravid at the helm in November 2007. He led the team for 14 Test matches that included three wins, five defeats and the remaining six were draws.

He has also been a mentor in the Indian Premier League (IPL), initially with Royal Challengers Bangalore and later with Mumbai Indians. He even served a term as President of Karnataka State Cricket Association and has been chairing the ICC Cricket Committee for four years now.

These stats and tons of experience make him the most high-profile contender, even though he hasn't formally coached any first class cricket team.

On the other hand, former all-rounder-turned-TV commentator and analyst Ravi Shastri was appointed as team director in 2014 by the BCCI. He has played 80 Tests and 150 ODIs and has led the team in just one Test match.

In his 18-month stint as Team Director, Shastri had mixed results – good in Tests and average in ODIs. Though, under him, India managed to enter the semi-finals of the World T20 2016, the team showed little consistency in its performance.

If one goes by the buzz in the BCCI and the amount of experience, Kumble seems to be right at the top in the race.

After the interviews, the panel will recommend the names it finds most suitable and then the board is likely to declare the new coach on June 24 at the BCCI working committee meeting in Dharamsala, Himahal Pradesh.

Panel consisting of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman to interview the candidates

Former Indian cricketers Anil Kumble, Pravin Amre and Lalchand Rajput, along with other aspirants are all set to be interviewed for the post of the India's head coach on Tuesday.

The three-member BCCI's cricket advisory panel, comprising eminent cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, will take the interview as well as the presentation of the shortlisted 21 candidates.

However, it is unlikely whether Ravi Shastri, who was India's team director until the end of the World Twenty20, will also make a presentation.

Meanwhile, Sandeep Patil, who confirmed his application for the job, has reportedly not yet received any communication from the BCCI, ESPNcricinfo reported.

Besides them, the other in contention for the job include Vikram Rathour, Praveen Amre, Balwinder Sandhu, Venkatesh Prasad and former Bangladesh coach Stuart Law.

Earlier, the BCCI had trimmed down the list of India Head Coach applicants from 57 to 21 candidates after they met the primary criteria specified by the sport's governing body.

India's head coach post had been vacant since Shastri's contract expired at the end of the World T20 earlier this year.

After the interview and presentation, the advisory committee will forward its recommendations to the BCCI President Anurag Thakur, who is then expected to discuss the decision in the working committee meeting in Dharamsala on June 24.

The BCCI-appointed four-member committee comprising Sanjay Jagdale, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman will take a major step towards appointing India’s head coach on Tuesday. They will choose from a shortlist of 21 aspirants during a meeting, scheduled at a south Kolkata hotel from 1.30pm to 7pm on Tuesday. The candidates will appear for interviews and will submit presentations. Some will be hooked up via video. The buzz around the whole thing is about picking the preferred one but BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke has asked for patience.

“Tomorrow (Tuesday)’s meeting may or may not give finality to the whole process. There might be more meetings before the committee selects the new head coach of the Indian team. We intend to announce the name after our working committee meeting (in Dharamsala) on June 24, but if the committee feels it requires more time, we can extend the deadline,” Shirke told The Indian Express. “The committee has an impeccable pedigree and no way are we going to interfere,” he added.

High profile candidates

Ravi Shastri, Anil Kumble and Sandeep Patil are the three most high-profile Indian names among the aspirants and according to an insider, they are coming to Kolkata for the interview. Apart from these three, Pravin Amre and Lalchand Rajput are also expected to be appear for the interview.

Shastri served as India’s team director for 20 months before his contract expired following the team’s exit from the World T20. Patil is the current chairman of selectors whose term ends in September. He had earlier coached India, in 1996, and also presided over Kenya’s march to the 2003 World Cup semi-final. But Kumble’s application seems to have made matters interesting.

The cricket board’s advertisement, seeking application for the position of head coach clearly mentioned: “(The candidates) should have successfully coached a cricket team of any of the member countries of the ICC, at the first class or at the international level”. It also said: “It is preferred that the candidate should be qualified through a certification/assessment program conducted by any of the Full Member countries and currently possess such a valid certification”.

Kumble doesn’t meet either of those criteria. His tenuous link to the dug-out is restricted to mentoring Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians. “It doesn’t really matter for a player of his stature,” said a source close to the BCCI-appointed committee. The former India captain is the country’s highest wicket-taker in Test cricket with 619 scalps from 132 matches. He is considered to be one of the favourites for the post.

According to the source, the vision to win abroad could be a key factor in landing the job. India had lost 15 away Tests between 2011 and 2015 before winning 2-1 in Sri Lanka last year. Though the team will play 13 home Tests in the coming season, but with the new coach likely to get a three-year contract — till the 2019 World Cup — an overseas improvement model might be sought. The three great cricketers in the committee — Tendulkar to join the discussion through video conference — took massive pride in winning matches on foreign soil during their playing days. In Virat Kohli, they have a like-minded Test captain at present.

A BCCI official insists that some foreign candidates with “top credentials”, too, have applied for the job. He didn’t reveal the name, but former Australia batting allrounder Stuart Law, who coached Bangladesh, was said to have thrown his hat into the ring.

“We are going into the meeting with an open mind. Let’s see how things turn out. We will forward our recommendation to (BCCI) secretary’s office,” said a committee member. The choice has to be ratified by the working committee for official announcement.

Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar will take the interview of the shortlisted 21 candidates.

Eyeing the Indian cricket team coach's job, big names such as Anil Kumble, Ravi Shastri and Sandeep Patil along with other aspirants are set to be interviewed for the coveted post at a city hotel in Kolkata on Tuesday.

The BCCI's cricket advisory committee comprising Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar will take the interview of the shortlisted 21 candidates. Tendulkar will join in from London via video conference.

Confirming the development, a top Cricket Association of Bengal official on Monday said all the "prominent" names who are in contention would attend the interview. "Obviously the two-three prominent ones would be here.

The meeting will start at 1.30 pm. The meeting will be convened by Sanjay Jagdale," he said.

Besides Shastri, Kumble and Patil, the other Indian names in contention include Vikram Rathour, Praveen Amre, Balwinder Sandhu and Venkatesh Prasad among others.

The recommendation of the advisory committee will be forwarded to the BCCI president Anurag Thakur for ratification at the working committee meeting in Dharamsala on June 24.

Spin great Kumble incidentally do not meet all the criteria -- of not coaching any international or first-class team, nor has he passed any course from the National Cricket Academy.

The 45-year-old, however, had mentored Mumbai Indians to two IPL wins in 2013 and 2015. The advisory committee can interview anyone outside the 21 as the Board is keen to announce the coach ahead of the West Indies tour next month.

Former India captain Anil Kumble and former cricketers Pravin Amre and Lalchand Rajput are among some of the applicants who will make presentations to the BCCI's three-member cricket advisory panel that will pick India's head coach. The presentations and interviews will be conducted in Kolkata from Tuesday.

It is understood that Kumble and Amre will meet the panel, comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, on Tuesday afternoon. It is not yet known whether Ravi Shastri, who was India's team director until the end of the World Twenty20, will also make a presentation. Shastri, who confirmed his application in early June, did not respond to the query sent by ESPNcricinfo.

Sandeep Patil, the chairman of selectors, has reportedly not yet received any communication from the BCCI. Patil had stated earlier this month that he had applied for the job.

Last week, the BCCI had trimmed the list of 57 names to 21 but clarified that the advisory committee could be given the entire list if required. The committee is expected to submit its choice by June 22. If it does so, the BCCI could announce the appointment at the working committee meeting in Dharamsala on June 24. In an interview with India Today, Ganguly did not divulge the names of the shortlisted candidates but said that the committee was hopeful of finalising a coach by June 24.

"The interviews will start from tomorrow. We know the candidates, we've shortlisted the candidates but unfortunately I cannot tell that to you. So please pardon me from doing that. Yes, as you said, the interview is tomorrow and hopefully by June 24 you will get to know the name of the Indian coach," he said.

According to a BCCI official, the advisory panel - which was appointed in June last year - has already met a few times to discuss procedures before it meets shortlisted candidates. It is also understood that the panel, including coordinator Sanjay Jagdale, has done "thorough homework" on the applicants who will travel to Kolkata on Tuesday. When asked whether the interview process will extend to Wednesday, the official said that a decision on that would be taken on the basis of what happens tomorrow.

The BCCI is seeking a coach for the India team after Shastri's contract expired at the end of the World T20 earlier this year. The board opened the process on June 1, with an advertisement on its website, and had set June 10 as a deadline for candidates to apply for the role.

Apart from Shastri, Patil and Kumble, current selector Vikram Rathour, Venkatesh Prasad, Balwinder Singh Sandhu and former Bangladesh coach Stuart Law also applied for the job.

Among the key qualifications stipulated by the BCCI was that candidates should have coached at the international or first-class level. It was also mentioned that "it is preferred that the candidate should be qualified through a certification/assessment program conducted by any of the Full Member countries, and currently possess such a valid certification."

BCCI panel likely to finalise India coach by Wednesday

The BCCI's cricket advisory committee, appointed to pick the India coach, carried out interviews with six to seven candidates on Tuesday in Kolkata. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who is one of the three members on the committee along with Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, said that the panel was likely to pick its final choice by the end of the day and forward it to BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke by Wednesday.

While Ganguly had told reporters early in the day that ten candidates were to be interviewed, he later said that the panel had met with six to seven candidates. He added that he could not divulge any other details and would want the BCCI to announce all further information.

Anil Kumble and Ravi Shastri were the most high-profile candidates who made their presentations on Tuesday. While Kumble appeared in person for the interview, Shastri spoke with the panel through Skype as he was overseas.

The other candidates who were interviewed were Tom Moody, Stuart Law, Lalchand Rajput,Pravin Amre and Andy Moles. Amre told ESPNcricinfo that he had laid out his vision for the Indian side and told the panel that one of his main aims as head coach would be to help the team perform well consistently overseas.

"It was also a good learning experience for me as the panel wanted to know exactly how I would achieve the objective of [helping] India become the No. 1 team in all forms," Amre said. "We went in detail on each criterion listed in the job application."

Sandeep Patil, the chairman of selectors, once again confirmed on Tuesday that he had "not been invited for an interview."

The hunt for a new coach began after Shastri's contract as team director expired at the end of the World T20 in April. The application process started on June 1, with an advertisement on the BCCI website, and the board set a deadline of June 10. It received 57 applications, and the list of candidates was trimmed to 21 last week.

Among the important qualifications listed in the advertisement included coaching experience at the international or first-class level. The BCCI had also stated that candidates who were qualified with a certification/assessment programme conducted by any of the Full Member nations and currently hold such certification, would be preferred.
