Former India captain Anil Kumble was on Thursday appointed as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. Kumble, whose 619 wickets in Test cricket is a record for India and third highest overall in the history, played 132 Tests and 271 ODIs for India in a career spanning 18 years. In the past, Kumble has been involved as a mentor for IPL teams Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI). Kumble even guided RCB to IPL 2009 final. This will be the first full-time coaching assignment for the former Indian captain. Kumble outgunned big names such as Tom Moody, Stuart Law, Dav Whatmore, Ravi Shastri and many more to become India’s next coach.

There was an intense battle for the role of India’s head coach, ever since the BCCI asked for applications. As many as 57 applications were received by the Indian cricket board, which included some of the biggest names such as Moody, Kumble, Shastri, former Sri Lanka and Pakistan coach Whatmore and many more. There were a few contenders from domestic Indian coaches as well, such as Pravin Amre and Lalchand Rajput (former Indian manager).

The Indian cricket team has gone without a head coach since the end of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, following which Duncan Fletcher’s contract ended. The team had the services of Shastri as the team director, but BCCI, fighting many battles outside was forced to keep pushing it further.

Kumble’s appointment also marks the end of the Indian infatuation towards overseas coaches, as it is the first time since the appointment of John Wright in 2000 that India have appointed a home coach. Before Wright, Angshuman Gaekwad was India’s coach. Following the exit of Wright, India witnessed an infamous tenure of Greg Chappell, followed by South Africa’s Gary Kirsten and then Fletcher.

Anil Kumble takes on a jumbo challenge

Anil Kumble can be given the charge of Indian cricket with complete authority.

Finally, the mad-race is over and after months of speculations and claims coming in from many immensely talented cricket managers, former India captain Anil Kumble has emerged as the new Indian coach. India’s highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, who is also only the second man ever in the history of cricket to take 10 wickets in an innings, Kumble certainly looks like a man who can be given the charge of Indian cricket with complete authority. A resolute character on and off the field, Kumble will be expected to do achieve those feats which none of his predecessors have not dared thinking.

‘Jumbo’ as he was fondly called for his peculiar bowling style, Kumble has landed into one of the toughest jobs in international cricket. The job of coaching international teams comes along with different set of expectations, but as far as India is concerned, it becomes extremely challenging with an unforgiving media and a vast majority of fans who decline to accept defeats.

Kumble’s appointment certainly marks the end of India’s flirtations with foreign coaches; as somewhere during the last few years the cricket management would have observed the chasm between an overseas coach and players, who may not get along right from the onset.

But with Kumble coming in, a lot can be entrusted on the former captain to take care of. Duncan Fletcher was criticised for not going around the country scouting talents, but an in-house man like Kumble would be aware of the talent that is there at his perusal.

Former India captain Anil Kumble has been appointed coach of the national side for one year, the BCCI announced on Thursday in Dharamsala. His first assignment will be India's four-Test tour of West Indies.

Kumble was among 57 candidates who applied for the position advertised by the BCCI earlier this month. He was included in the shortlist of 21 names and then met the cricket advisory committee in Kolkata on Tuesday for an interview.

His application for the coach's position came as a surprise to a few in the board, given his lack of experience in the area - he had never coached a side before this appointment but has been a mentor in the IPL, first with Royal Challengers Bangalore and then Mumbai Indians.

Kumble's lack of experience, however, is made up for by his standing as a player and captain in an 18-year-long international career. He finished as India's highest wicket-taker in Tests, and the third-highest overall, with 619 wickets, including a best of 10 for 74 against Pakistan in Delhi in 1999.

After being appointed Test captain in November 2007, he led India in 14 matches until his retirement a year later. Among his notable victories as captain was the Perth Test in January 2008, which was played after the controversial Sydney Test where, among other issues, India faced allegations of racism from the Australian side.

Kumble has also served in administrative roles after his retirement. He was elected president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association in November 2010, served as chairman of the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore and also headed the BCCI's technical committee.

The bowling, batting and assistant coaches will be done soon, said BCCI president Anurag Thakur
